Middle Tennessee Pony Club (MTPC) held their 66th annual Horse Trials at beautiful Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tennessee on October 6-7, 2018. This is the longest, continuously running recognized horse trials in the U.S. Usually, October brings cooler weather, but this weekend was more like summer, with highs reaching the 90° mark and lows around 68°F. Still, “the event went off well and it was a safe weekend for horses and riders. We started 155 riders in dressage with divisions from Starter to Preliminary. Riders from 10 states were represented. The oldest rider had her 66th birthday on cross country day and the youngest rider was only 9 years old,” said MTPC Secretary Delana Owen.
Judges were: Pres. Julie Congleton of Kentucky and Dressage Judge Janice Holmes of Ohio. CD:XC was Jonathan Wells of Tennessee. Show Jumps by Fuzzy Mayo of Nashville.
Nearly all the division winners finished on just their dressage score, and many had flawless cross country and show jumping rounds.
Jana Lyle and Heavenly SCF won the Open Preliminary division (10 entries), finishing on a score of 42.8. She had been fourth after dressage; had 5.2 time penalties on cross country, but moved up to first; and finished in first with no show jumping penalties. Alayna Backel with Phantom of the Oscar had been ninth after dressage, incurred 7.6 time penalties on cross county, but finished in second on a score of 50.2 after a clear show jumping round.
With 21 entries,the Training division had to be split. Roberta Christie and Must Be Lucky (must be!) won the Open A (11 entries) on a score of 33.2. The pair moved up from 4th after dressage to third after cross country, and then won on just their dressage score. Rachel Miles and Zane, who were first after dressage, incurred 3.6 time penalties on cross country to finish in second (34.4).
Gracie Montgomery won Open Training B (10 entries) on Quicky de Barbereau on just her dressage score of 29.6. Sarah Beth Slaughter and In The Spotlight had been first after dressage, dropped to second after cross country with 4 time penalties, and then had 4 jump penalties in show jumping to finish in second.
Novice Jr/YR (11 entries) top honors went to Jocelyn Howland and Niner’s Blace, finishing on just their dressage score (33.1). Novice Junior (11 entries) winner was Breeana Robinette on Velvet Brown, finishing on just their dressage score(31.2). And the Novice Open (10 entries) winner was Melissa Schielein with Little Indian Boy RSF (29.3). Erica Addison and Fire for Effect finished in second on just their dressage score (30.5).
With 61 total entries, there were five divisions in Beginner Novice. The Beginner Novice Jr/YR (10 entries) winner was Ava Deas and A Clever Gent, moving up from 6th after dressage to first on just their dressage score (35.8).
In Beginner Novice Junior A (11 entries), Sophie Coorssen and Coolnaboy Rubens won the blue on just their dressage score (30.0). Sydney Doss and Hooked On You finished in second on just their dressage score (32.5).
In Beginner Novice Junior B (13 entries), Darby Howard and Made Ya Look (yes you did!) won on a score of 31.8. Ava Williams and Lottery Ticket were tied for first place throughout, on just their dressage score of 31.8, but her final placing was second.
In Beginner Novice Open A (14 entries), Melissa Schielein racked up another win, this time with Ottonowhere, with an amazing low score of 20.5! The best at the event! Hannah Maloney and Phoenyx were not far behind in second, also on just their dressage score (25.5).
In Beginner Novice Open B (13 entries), Heidi Olson and Galouette took with win on their dressage score of 27.5. Camilla Green on Fernhill Enuff Dun also finished on just her dressage score, in second place (30.3).
The Starters had three divisions with a total of 31 entries. Starter Jr. A (9 entries) winner was Sabrina Knight and Splish Splash (guess this one likes water!) on their dressage score of 37.3. Hannah Brandt, riding Up and Over Oliver, were third after dressage, but finished in second on just their dressage score (38.5).
Starter Jr. B (9 entries) winner was Sarah Bomar (age 12) riding Road Less Traveled, finishing on just her dressage score (31.5). Morgan Koelin held second with Along Came A Spider over all three phases (34.8).
Jesse Kirchhoff won the Starter Open (13 riders) on Paint by Numbers (Flash) on just her dressage score of 27.0. Cathy Rutter and Casanova were tied for fourth after dressage, but had clear rounds on cross country and show jumping to finish in second on just their dressage score (31.8). Elizabeth Walters, who was first after dressage on Golden Reason, unfortunately had 20 jumping penalties on cross country to drop to seventh.
