Mother’s Day Delight
At Mississippi Horse Park
by Paula Touchstone
The Mississippi Horse Park was proud to host its first ever Brother-N-Law Team Roping event May 11-13, 2007. This prestigious event brought with it the chance for one lucky team roper to leave in a new Dodge Mega Cab Dually as well as the chance for ropers to win saddles, buckles and large cash prizes. Over 800 teams from seven states came to compete for their chance to win part of the $67,000 dollar payout and the other outstanding prizes. After the dust cleared in the arena, however, it was a local high school sophomore who would be handed the keys to the new truck.
John Daniell Robinson, J.D. for short, from West Point, MS gave his mother Chell the best Mother’s Day surprise she could ever imagine when he won the title of hi point team roper at the 3-day event. It wasn’t an easy win for the 16 year old, however, not only did he have to battle through 825 teams from which the top 100 fastest times made it back to the short round but also beat out two formidable opponents in the first ever 3 way tie finals event. Ricky Leblanc and Joe Hall joined J.D. in the finals round where the cowboys opted for a “rope-off” to break the tie over the chance for one of them to “buy out” the other two for the truck. In the rope-off each roper was required to choose a partner to rope with whom they also must have roped with at some point over the course of the competition. The partnered teams were Ricky Leblanc and Jeremy Johnson, Joe Hall and Shannon Tucker and J.D. Robinson and Cody Warner.
The crowd sat in anticipation as all three teams had to rope three rounds to decide the average winner. J.D.’s decision to choose his high school rodeo roping partner Cody, a native of Louisville MS, proved to be the best fit as the two teenagers went on to have the fastest three run average and beat out their older competition. Watch for proud parents Glenn and Chell Robinson and J.D. at the next event in their new Mega Cab truck. Congratulations again J.D. for this outstanding accomplishment. The Horse Park looks forward to the next Brother-N-Law event, which has already been scheduled for March 2008.
