Hunting For A Jump, McDaniel Woodworks Can Build It For You By Tom Burriss Tim McDaniel loves to work with wood. Woodworking and building have been an interest since he was little. "It is just something I really enjoy." So much so that he has gotten in to the business of building jumps. You can find him quite often in his shop, in the back of his parents barn, building jumps. The 22 year old East Memphis native, now living in Collierville, had to hang his spurs for a while when he started off to college. An enjoyment he reluctantly put aside. He has since kept stride with the equine world by building jumps. He started building jumps for his home arena. With a neighborhood full of one and two horse backyard lots, his work was seen readily. A neighbor liked the look of Tim's jumps and asked him to build one. It was his first order. It was not long before word of mouth and quality put Tim fully into business. He keeps a room full of simple jumps in stock: fences, standards, poles, wings, flower boxes, brick boxes and stone walls. Inventory moves fast and orders keep coming in. Tim's reputation for quality jumps has spread. The Germantown Charity Horse Show has contacted him about doing some of their jumps. He also offers a full line of stock jumps and standards: wing standards, open wing, slanted wing, picket wing, and brick or stone wishing well styles. If you do not see exactly what you want, no problem, he also custom builds to specification and can add letters and designs to your liking. "I will do what I can to make you what you want," is Tim's slogan. He has also started making tack trunks, but admits, that is still in the beginning stages. Tim also has rental jumps available. As a horseman, Tim started riding in the fifth grade. "We encouraged our boys to pursue the activities that they liked. Tim liked horses," says his mom, Patty McDaniel, a retired school teacher who runs Maple Grove Farm, an enriching farm camp for kids, ages four to nine. At 14 years old, he found his interest in in Trail and English disciplines. He later progressed into Eventing. The McDaniel family moved to Collierville about four years ago. "We were boarding our horses and decided to move to be able to keep the horses at home," remarks Patty. Right now, Tim is a student at the University of Memphis studying to be a game warden; the first to do so from UM, in a major that he created. He looks forward to getting back to horses however. He has a thoroughbred which he rides. The McDaniels also had an unexpected mule born at their place from a thoroughbred they had purchased. Of course, his name is SURPRISE.
