Simpson Wins Youth High Point At Briarwood Banquet On October 24, members of Briarwood Saddle Club gathered for the annual awards banquet, which was held at Thomas Arena in Holly Springs, Mississippi. To get into the holiday spirit, a small Halloween show was arranged to take place after the potluck dinner. There were two separate costume classes. Ashton Fisher won the mounted costume class with her miniature horse, CHINO. Stephanie Alsbrook placed second with POCO. In the unmounted costume class, Samantha Watkins placed first, receiving twenty dollars. Nicki Smith took second place, earning ten dollars. A few mounted events also took place after the costume events. A bloomer race was held, with all the participants receiving an award. While the children were participating in the games and other activities, the adults took part in a cakewalk. Voting for the 2004 Queen and Princess also took place. Leigh Ann Clifton handed her crown to Athena Kalafat, and Claire Murray was chosen to be the new Princess, succeeding Erica Bailey. Both girls will compete in the SASCA Royalty Show in the spring. High point individual awards were also given. Jane CoIn received the Adult High Point award, while Lori Simpson earned the Youth High Point award. Tanner Lopez was awarded to Pony High Point, which he earned on his pony, SUGAR BEAR. Kim Dillard received the Shannon Smith Memorial Award. This award, initiated in 2000 after the death of a beloved Briarwood Youth Member, is presented to a Briarwood youth member who exhibits sportsmanship, a willing and helpful attitude, good character, and a sincere love of horses. Jessica Comesanas was the recipient of the youth All Star Award, for all her hard work during the show season. Kay Lopez received the adult All Star Award. Door prizes were awarded, and they were provided by Cowboy Comer, Dixie Cafe, Frontier Ranch Supply, Candy Hundhausen, Van's Leathercraft, George Tackett, and Sandie Simpson. Live music was provided by local band, Outback. Briarwood's 2004 show season will begin in April. Shows are held at the Thomas Arena in Holly Springs Friday nights starting at 7:00 p.m. The schedule includes events such as: Showmanship, English Equitation, Western Pleasure events, Gaited events, Pony Horsemanship, as well as pony, youth, and open speed events.
