Foxchasers Hunt Quarry In Bolton Area by Nancy Brannon The peal of the huntsman's horn rang in the New Year for members of the Oak Grove-Fourth Bluff Hunt Club. The foxhunters were dressed in their traditional formal hunt attire of frock coats, white breeches, and stock ties. Seeking fox or coyote, the hounds were cast on part of the 1,200 acres in the Wade H. Bolton trust property behind Bolton High School in northeast Shelby County. Huntsman Richard "Dickie" Watson said hunting conditions were great on Thursday with the cloudy skies, heavy humidity and intermittent rain making it easy for hounds to find the scent. They ran a coyote, which gave some good views to the field members. The hunters were back again on Saturday, January 4 for another hunt in the territory, but conditions, while great for people, were not optimum for hound work. The warm windy weather made conditions much more difficult for hounds to pick up the scent. According to Watson, they did run a grey fox line for a while, but the quarry did not come out in the open for folks to view. They were not the only hunters out on Saturday. Rabbit hunters, with their Beagles, shared the country with the fox, or more appropriately, coyote, chasers. Still, the land "suited our needs," said Watson. "There is a lot of game out there and very few deer," which is good for fox hounds, which can sometimes switch from coyote or fox to deer and then run out of the territory. "We all had a good time and enjoyed riding in this area," he commented. The hunters gathered for a "breakfast" after the hunt at the Bolton Community Center.
