A Brazilian bull rider was killed Sunday, August 29, 2021 when his spur got caught in a rope, pulling him under the bull, and the animal stepped on his chest, according to the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) touring group.

Amadeu Campos Silva, 22, was competing in the bull-riding Velocity Tour event at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, said Andrew Giangola, PBR spokesperson. He was pronounced dead at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, just three days before his 23rd birthday.

PBR’s livestock director Cody Lambert said he saw the crash and told USA Today: “When he came off, his spur got tangled up and it turned him upside down right under the bull’s back leg. It’s just a really freak, tragic accident.”

Campos Silva lost his balance and his spur got stuck in the flank strap, which is wrapped around the bull’s lower torso to encourage it to buck. In a “freak accident,” Campos Silva was pulled underneath the bull, which then stomped on his chest, Giangola said.

Giangola said the bull, named “Classic Man,” will still be eligible for future events despite the tragedy. The bull was not at fault, he said.

“It clearly was not an act of aggression,” he said. “The bull was bucking in his normal pattern.”

“A bull rider with a lot of promise,” Campos Silva competed in the 2020 Professional Bull Riders World Finals after debuting in the United States the year before. He was pursuing his dream to support his family.

“He was a determined cowboy,” Giangola said.

PBR Riders Pledge Entire Purse of Event on USS Lexington
To Family Of Fallen Rider Amadeu Campos Silva

PUEBLO, Colorado (September 2, 2021) – As the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) family continues to mourn fallen bull rider Amadeu Campos Silva, who was tragically killed during competition at a Velocity Tour event on Sunday, August 29 in Fresno, Calif., the organization, its athletes, and partners have vowed to support the family that the 22-year-old left behind.

This weekend, the entire $100,000 athlete purse for PBR Air Force Reserve Cowboys for a Cause in Corpus Christi, Texas on Saturday, September 4, will be donated to Amadeu’s family. PBR will match this $100,000 donation as well as fan donations up to $100,000. The special team event on top of the USS Lexington aircraft carrier will be televised on CBS Television Network on Sunday, Sept. 5 at noon EDT.

PBR has also started a fundraising effort for Amadeu’s family, in which anyone around the world can make a donation that will go directly to Amadeu’s immediate family, who came to the U.S. to support his bull riding dream. Fans can contribute by visiting www.pbr.com/amadeumemorial

Ariat, an official partner of PBR, has pledged $25,000 to support the Silva family.

Amadeu Campos Silva was runner up at the 2019 PBR Brazilian Finals, the year he came to the U.S. to compete. He rode bulls to provide for his family, who he had tried to support since he was a little boy. When Amadeu was seven years old, his family was being evicted from their home in Brazil. The young boy asked a local rancher if he could milk his cows in exchange for his family staying in an empty house on the property. From that point on, Amadeu was always looking to provide for his family.

“Amadeu’s passing pains us all to the core,” said PBR Commissioner and CEO Sean Gleason. “His main goal wasn’t trophies or buckles or bragging rights, it was to put food on his family’s table. No amount of money can bring Amadeu back to his family, but we know he’d be very happy to see efforts underway, led by his fellow riders, to care for them.”
