Trainers Nick Rivera and Tik Maynard have been busy filming virtual training sessions at Maynard’s Copperline Farm near Ocala, Florida. The videos are designed to help elevate riders through the ranks from beginners to national competitors, and can be found online through The Horseman’s University.
With a focus on natural horsemanship, The Horseman’s University is an online clearing house with virtual training sessions ranging from rider and horse fitness, halter training, trailer loading, to ranch riding, roping, and upper level eventing.
Rivera says a lot of trainers have their own videos for their followers to view, but very few websites exist with multiple trainers providing frequent updates and new content.
“I am just trying to provide people a way to learn good horsemanship from exceptional trainers, and the fact that other people have other programs is fine,” says Rivera.
The Horseman’s Universityhas been up and running for two years. It is the culmination of the labor of professional trainers Nick Rivera and Ryan Rose of Wisconsin, and its trainers have over 100 years of cumulative experience with horses, Rivera explained.
Many are from the newer generation of trainers. “One of the guys we have some footage of is Doug Jordan. He is a cutting horse trainer out of Texas. When you watch him work with horses, you can see the years of expertise, of experience, and the humility he has with horses,” Rivera added. That footage will be available on The Horseman’s University in the future.
Rivera noted that the term ‘natural horsemanship’ makes some people bristle. After all, he stated, “Nothing we do with horses is really natural. But I feel like good horsemanship is good horsemanship.” For Rivera, working with trainers from north to south is good exposure that helps him learn from other people.
Rivera says with the help of his brothers in the information technology field, and a third-party web vendor, it is easy to sign up and navigate The Horseman’s University online, and every customer receives the same unlimited viewing.
Virtual training sessions include a Wisconsin duo, Ryan and Emily Rose. Ryan’s skills in horse development focus on training horses in ranch versatility, and Emily trains on core exercises for riding, based on her experience as a physical therapist and certified equine rehabilitation practitioner.
From Florida, trainer Tik Maynard has online courses for eventing from his experience representing Canada in three world championships, and trainer Jake Biernbaum helps horse owners develop relationships that make the horse a good partner for their owners.
From the Western half of the U.S., trainer Richard Schouten helps humans develop language with horses, including body language and aids; and training duo Doug and Amy Jordan have created the Equine Performance Partnership.
