Grand Junction, Tenn. — The Hobart Ames Memorial field trials were held at his namesake Ames Plantation commencing Tuesday, January 12, and concluding on Saturday, January 16. The trial was scheduled to begin Monday, January 11, but was held off a day for the completion of an earlier scheduled all-age stake. As it happened, snow arrived that Monday. The following five days were free of inclement weather. The Open All-Age Stake drew 36 entries, the companion Open Derby, 17.
The well-known arbiter Mike Jackson, advertised to judge the Open All-Age, was severely stricken on the way to Ames, and returned home to Battle Ground, Indiana. Latest information is that Mike is recovering. Mason Ashburn of Trenton, Tenn. stepped in and joined Jim Lawless of Sparta, Illinois to judge the Open All-Age Stake.
The Open All-Age winner was S F Stetson, white, orange and ticked, four-year-old pointer male, owned by Larry L. Smith of Altoona, Iowa, and handled by Larry Huffman.
Second was Hendrix’s Touch Up, four year-old white and orange pointer male, owned by Guy and Burke Hendrix of Hernando, Miss., and handled by Steve Hurdle. Third was Touch’s Blackout, white and orange ticked pointer male, recently acquired by John Harkins, and handled by Randy Anderson.
The three top-placed dogs all had bird work – the winner, Stetson, logging five finds and a back, and Blackout, braced with Stetson, two finds.
Seventeen youngsters were entered in the Hobart Ames Memorial Derby Stake, which followed the All Age Stake. Jim Lawless was joined by Ryan Braddock of Ames Plantation to judge the Derby.
The first and second place winners in the Open Derby were handled by Ike Todd, and owned by Keith Wright of Covington, Indiana, who scouted his winners. First was pointer male Touch’s Walk The Line and second was Touch’s Wild Finale, pointer male.
Third was Como Thunder, pointer male, owned by Billy Blackwell, Rachel Blackwell, Doug Arthur and David Russell, and handled by David Russell.
