Fall is the time for the United States Dressage Federation™ (USDF) 2020 Great American Insurance Group/USDF Regional Dressage Championships, presented by SmartPak. The mid-south region had a strong presence at Region 4 Championships, held October 1-4, 2020 at the National Equestrian Center in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri. These championships recognize the outstanding efforts of riders in each USDF region, and the top amateur and open riders at each championship receive an invitation to compete at the US Dressage Finals. Jamie Lawrence, instructor at Mid-South Dressage Academy (MDA) in Hernando, MS, remarked, "Multiple barns from the area attended in full force, and the rides I had the privilege to see were all lovely and polished."

Caitlyn Massey of Arlington, TN and Daniel Patterson of Olive Branch, MS competed at the Region 4 Championship at Lake St. Louis, Missouri. Daniel and Caitlyn tied for Third Level Champion in Jr/YR, but the tie breaker went in favor of Daniel and his Sacred Showdown (67.188%).Caitlyn was Reserve Champion at Third Level Jr/YR with Mikato, also scoring 67.188%, and Caitlyn earned her Bronze medal at this show. Daniel was first in NAJYRC Individual (65.897%) and first in Third Level Test of Choice (64.875%).

This year MDA qualified with six horses.  Lawrence earned her USDF Gold Medal at both Grand Prix and Intermediate II levels riding Ubachon, “Ubi,” owned by Nancy Fishman. She scored 65.368% in Intermediare 2 (third place), 64.674% in FEI Test of Choice, and second in Open Grand Prix on a score of 63.913%. Lawrence said, “Ubi by far exceeded my expectations this year by ending as Reserve Champion at Grand Prix Open and barely missing out of Reserve for Intermediate II. Ubi is a Rockstar!”

Lawrence also rode Margaret Balogh’s Fenix De Aimaren in Open Training Level, scoring 67.155% and in First Level, scoring 63.542%. She rode Joanna Haynes’ Jazmina in First Level, scoring 61.667% and 63.889%.

Lawrence’s student, Marikay Asberry, earned Training Level Champion (71.724% and 69.653%) and First Level Reserve Champion on her 5-year-old Facetime.

Lawrence complimented her, “Marikay works unbelievably hard on this horse, mostly by herself, and drives over five hours each way for lessons. We imported Facetime as a 3-year-old, and he has been everything we hoped for and more.”

Jennifer Van De Loo of Holly Springs, MS took two horses to the Region 4 Championship. She earned two seconds in AA Fourth Level with Duke of the Dawn (68.264% and 66.667%) and second on Notre Dame in AA Training Level, scoring a remarkable 71.638%.
