This event attracted some “celebrities” from the eventing world.
Daniela Moguel and her 17-year-old Thoroughbred mare Cecelia won the CCI3*-S. Moguel had competed in the June 6-7, 2020 horse trials at River Glen in the Open Intermediate division, placing fourth on a score of 39.4 – with just 4 added penalty points in show jumping to her dressage score. At this horse trials, moving up to CCI3*-S, the pair placed fourth after dressage (36.7), incurred 4 penalty points in show jumping and 3.6 time faults on cross country, and still won the division with a final score of 44.3, just barely ahead of second placed Rebecca Brown and her Fernhill Fortitude (46.3).
Originally from Mexico, Moguel and her husband Zully Castrejon now run Eventing D’azull in Shelby, North Carolina. Moguel had planned to campaign Cecelia more extensively this year – at Kentucky, Ocala Jockey Club, Morven Park – but all were cancelled because of COVID-19.
In an interview with Lindsay Barreth for Chronicle of the Horse, Moguel described her partnership with Cecelia as a “match made in heaven. …This is the coolest horse I’ve ever ridden and that I’m probably ever going to ride in my life. She knows exactly what I’m thinking when I’m thinking it – we’re so connected.”
The two have a six-year partnership. The pair represented Mexico in Eventing at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ at Tryon in 2018 (placing 44th). Back in 2015, Moguel (on Cecelia) was the highest-placing Mexican rider at the Pan American Games in Toronto and the pair placed second at Morven Park CIC3* that year.
International three-day eventer Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp won the Open Preliminary division on her Cooley HHS Calamaria. She had a dressage score of 30.0 penalty points, but incurred 4.4 time penalties on cross country, still finishing in first on a score of 34.4. In Open Training – B, she brought home first and second places on her two other Cooley horses: first on Shanroe Cooley with just their dressage score of 23.9; and second on Cooley Starship, also on just their dressage score of 30.7.
Erin Pullen and Tag won the Open Intermediate division, placing fourth after dressage (35.5), but moving up to first with only 4.4 time penalties on cross country, finishing with a score of 39.9.
Hoos Who at River Glen? Rebecca Hoos and Little Cruz were third in the Open Intermediate, moving up from fifth after dressage (37.0), but having 4 show jumping faults and 11.2 time penalties on cross country, but jumping clean. Final score: 52.2, just two points off from second placed John Michael Durr on Blue Rodeo (50.2).
In fact, ‘Becca out-did her dad Bill Hoos, riding Celtic Rhythm. He was first after dressage (28.9), but had 8 show jumping and 1.2 time penalties and 26 time penalties on cross country, although jumping clean. He moved down to fourth on a score of 64.1.
Erika Adams of Knoxville, TN rode Townsend, owned by Jim Schmidhammer, to first place in Novice Horse. They had a fine dressage test, scoring 28.6 penalty points, went clear on the cross country, but had 4 jump penalties in the show jumping phase. They finished first on a score of 32.6 penalty points. Since Townsend is also an OTTB, he also won the TIP.
Erika has been riding Townsend since May 2019 and this was his fourth Novice event. When he came off the track, he went straight to foxhunting, with Jim hunting the horse. “He’s a really good foxhunter!” Erika said. She hunts him some with Tennessee Valley Hunt, and he was a Third Field leader with another hunt in Virginia, she said. “He will move up to Training level this fall,” she said.
Also in the Novice Horse division, Clare Pinney and Buzzword placed sixth. Their dressage score of 35.2 put them initially in fourth, but the pair had 8 show jumping penalties and finished sixth on 43.2 with a clear cross country round.
Casey Balloch Johnsey placed fourth in Training Rider on Little Miss Tennessee, owned by Scott Keating. Her dressage score was a respectable 30.6, but she incurred 4 show jumping penalties and 3.6 time penalties on cross country to finish on a score of 38.1.
Johnsey commented, “I was super pleased with this past River Glen Horse Trials! It was my and Tenny’s first time competing at Training level and I think Tenny did so well because everything was moved around: the dressage and stadium rings were flip flopped and the XC course started where it usually ends. I think everyone was pleasantly surprised! We are blessed that River Glen is our “home” eventing facility, as it is one of the most beautiful farms in TN!”
