Just in time to celebrate Halloween, pumpkins, all things fall – and Quarter Horses, the Mid South Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity (MSQHBF) hosted their 37th annual show at the Show Place Arena in Cordova, Tenn. October 26-27, 2019. The show included a Halloween Costume Class on Saturday evening, and a Dog Race following the Costume Class. This year, MSQHBF was thrilled to offer American Paint Horse Association approved classes in addition to the full lineup of American Quarter Horse Association classes at the Futurity.
Unfortunately, the weather put a damper on the show, with heavy rains all day Friday and into Saturday morning. But as soon as the rains stopped Saturday afternoon, show secretary Pat Kress said she was “flooded” with entries. Kress said there was a 25% increase in horse stall bookings this year.
Classes on Saturday morning began, as is appropriate for a breeders’ show, with the halter classes: AQHA Stallions, followed by the AQHA Geldings and AQHA Mares.
Performance classes got started after the break with MSQHBF Western Pleasure, later followed by AQHA Western Pleasure classes, and this year’s special feature – APHA Western classes. Later in the day came Horsemanship, Ranch Riding, Reining, and Trail classes.
Announcer Haskell Sheeks kept the show running on time, with judging by Butch Carse, Peter Morgan and Michael Swain. Show organizer Penny Robertson kept busy all weekend with the myriad tasks that make a show go smoothly. She posted on facebook:
“What a weekend! Despite the weather, we had a wonderful time at the show and greatly appreciate everyone coming out to show with us! It was definitely a learning experience hosting both an AQHA and APHA show, but we sincerely thank everyone for their patience and support! We could not have asked for better exhibitors! That being said, we are always looking to improve, so if you have recommendations for classes, etc. for next year, please let us know! Thank you for making this show so much fun!”
About MSQHBF: The MSQHBF was founded in 1982, comprised of Quarter Horse breeding farms in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The futurity is designed to show the offspring of select stallions in the mid-south area.
