What do you do on the first weekend of summer – the Summer Solstice – when the heat and humidity have returned to the mid-south? You waive coats at the Mid-South Dressage Academy dressage show, of course! And you dance to music with your horse, as Amanda Bailey did in a Third Level Musical Freestyle with her horse Quemaito, entertaining the crowd on both Saturday and Sunday. The pair earned a score of 68.700 on Saturday and 66.667 on Sunday. There was also some impromptu dancing going on with the people. And there was one buck at the far side of the dressage arena, but we won’t talk about it.

Mid-South Dressage Academy hosted the third USDF show of the season June 22-23, 2019, appropriately named the Summer Solstice Show. The light and airy indoor arena, with all the doors open, was fairly comfortable in spite of the “sauna-like” atmosphere, as Mary Cour Burrows described it.  Still, the hard working horses were sweating, as expected.

Judge for the show Birgit Valkenborg is a Canadian/USEF ‘S’ Dressage judge. She is co-owner of Valkenhof Dressage.

Elizabeth Clifton said it was a “great show, well subscribed, and a fun bunch” of people attending.  “We had some new people from Alabama. We had riders from Nashville, from Kentucky, and the group from Jonesboro, Arkansas,” as well as the locals from Mississippi and Tennessee.

High Point Adult Amateur for the show was Jenny Van De Loo and Duke of the Dawn; Third Level test 3, scoring 67.375%.

Natasja Kraska and her Windsor did well at Grand Prix and were FEI High Scorers with 61.957%.

Jorja Samsel with MDA’s Axel were Junior/Young Rider High Point scorers; Second Level test 1, scoring 65.946%.

Jody Wilson and Fabulosity were Open High Point scorers; Training test 3, scoring 72.586%/
