The Tennessee High School Rodeo Association (TNHSRA) held its second rodeo of the 2019 season March 9-10, 2019 at the Show Place Arena in Memphis, Tenn. It was a joint rodeo with the Cinch Jr. High division (6th – 8th grades) that included two performances – plus some added attractions. The first rodeo of the season was at Scottsville, Kentucky on February 16.
On Friday morning, TNHSRA for the fifth year hosted the 4-H/Inner City rodeo, giving local youth an opportunity to learn about rodeo events, but this year with a special guest. Gov. Bill Lee came to watch the students learn about horses and rodeo with the Tennessee High School Rodeo participants, and took a few minutes to speak to the students. Gov. Lee encouraged the 3rd grade students to ask questions about what agriculture is and where their food comes from. He said, “If we can know more about [where our food comes from], we can know more about how to be healthy adults. Agriculture is a very important sector of the economy. For kids to understand what agriculture is and where their food comes from, and even consider Ag as part of their future – that is important.” While at the Agricenter International, Gov. Lee toured the innovation center at Helena Agri-Enterprises and the automated greenhouse that are on the Agricenter campus.
TNHSRA spokesman Joe Gibson said, “We had about 100 kids come on Friday morning, with Tim Roberts of the Agricenter organizing the trip. Dr. Samantha Tate with Tennessee Equine Hospital spoke to the kids and gave them an idea of what is involved in caring for horses. The Tennessee High School Rodeo contestants discussed and demonstrated the different rodeo events. Then the kids got the opportunity to go into the arena and try their hand at roping dummies, tying goat dummies, and petting horses. Governor Bill Lee visited on Friday and spoke to the kids before joining them in the arena for a few minutes. Afterwards, the students were treated to lunch provided by Agricenter.”
On Friday night March 8, TNHSRA hosted a separate barrel race as a fundraiser for TNHSRA, which included Kiddie Barrels (10 & Under), $300 added Open 4D, $50 added Youth 3D, $50 added Masters Class, $50 added Adult 3D Barrels (19-39), and $50 added Open 3D Poles. This barrel race was both Tenn. and Miss. IBRA approved.
On Saturday night, TNHSRA hosted a Parent-Member Rodeo, Gibson said, “The events included Parent/Member Dally Ribbon Roping, Men’s Barrel Race (but could not be on a barrel horse), Unmounted Goat Tying, and Women’s Chute Dogging. We had over 100 entries and everyone had fun.”

Plus, interested members can compete in Cutting Horse events at Arena One in Batesville, MS on April 6-7, 2019.
