Grand Oaks Resort in Weirsdale, Florida presented the Grand Oaks Classic, consisting of a Combined Test, Derby & Pleasure Show, on February 8-10, 2019. The American Driving Society approved show started on Friday morning February 8 with Dressage and Cones Competition, followed by the Derby in the afternoon. Awards for the Derby and Combined Test were given at Friday night’s BBQ dinner.
Pleasure Driving competition began at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, with dinner afterwards on Saturday evening. Pleasure Driving competition continued on Sunday, again beginning at 8 a.m. The event also included, the favorite, Carriage Dog Class and a Costume Class.
Combined Test and Derby judges were Mickie Bowen and Craig Kellogg, with Mickie Bowen doing double duty also as the Pleasure Driving judge.
Mid-south drivers participating in the combined test and derby, single pony division, included Pam Gaston driving JJ’s Susie Q, Brenda Rachor driving Bunny, Wanda Chancellor driving Rollingwoods Movin’ On Up, and Bob Vance from Jamestown, Tenn. driving Buckeye. Pam Gaston and Brenda Rachor also competed in the entire pleasure show. Wanda Chancellor and Bob Vance competed in the combined test: dressage and cones, with Wanda driving in Intermediate and Bob driving in Preliminary level. Buckeye is a versatile horse, as Bob also rides his horse in Civil War reenactments.
Pam and Suzy Q were third in “progressive obstacles” and second in “cross country.”
Elizabeth Keathley, from the Nashville area, competed with her pony in Intermediate. She is also the onsite trainer at Grand Oaks and lives there six months of the year, the other six months at the Cannon Carriage Driving Center in Woodbury, TN.

Driving begins with Dressage on Thursday and Friday, continues with the Marathon on Saturday, and concludes with the Cones phase on Sunday, March 10.
