Cool Canadian air dipped into the mid-south for West Tennessee Hunter Jumper Association’s USEF-rated Harvest Time Show, November 8-11, 2018 at the Germantown Charity Horse Show grounds in Germantown, Tenn. Temperatures barely reached above 40°F on Saturday, but sunny skies helped make the cold more tolerable, as well as the warm hospitality. WTHJA treated folks to a pizza lunch on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning. Barney Mallace says the show had “really good success!”
Entries were good at this show – nearly 170 entries by mid-day Saturday with more to come, and the Canadian air wasn’t the only “out-of-towner” at the show. Folks brought their horses from Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, one entry from Texas, and, of course, west Tennessee. Show Steward Jane Bugni, from Valrico, Florida, was prepared for the cold, but was also ready to return to the warm Florida weather. Although, she did say that she had endured the hottest summer on record in Florida this year.
Judges for the hunter and equitation classes were Mindy Coleman of Arrington, Tennessee and Kristin Nixon of Arvada, Colorado. Jumper judge was Paul Sullivan from Mounds, Oklahoma. Course designer was Jackie Leemon of Wellington, Florida.
In addition to the regular hunter and jumper classes, the show featured the David Q. Wright Equitation Classic, the $9,999 1.5m Jumper Classic, and USEF (A) rated Jumper Level 3. There were also the Green Classic on Friday and Adult, Children’s, Junior, A/O, Junior, Pony, Green Pony, and Jumper Classics on Saturday. Classic winners and division Champions received fine leather halters in addition to their ribbons.
Sunday began with the main event: the WTHJA Hunter Derby, with Courtney Link and Limerick taking top honors and the $1,500 prize; the pair also won the Ariat Adult Medal class.
Winner of Sunday’s David Q. Wright Equitation Classic was Anna Marie Mayes riding More Optimistic (a good perspective for anyone).
Abigail Sellers and Plaisir Du Laurier won the 1.15m Jumper Classic, taking home the $2,000 prize.
In the WIHS/NAL Child/Adult Amateur Classic, Shanna Beyer was in the blue with Avonlea, followed in second by Kakki Wright and Comaraderie. Beyer and Avonlea were also Adult Amateur Hunter 18-35 Champions, while Wright and Comaraderie were Adult Amateur Hunter 36+ Champions.
In the Green/Regular Pony Hunter Classic, Hanna Hudson took top honors with Pentens Logan, followed by Kate Barton and Alleghany in second.
In the Jr./AO Hunter Classic, Lindsey Cayce took home the blue ribbon with Gidget. Allen Tate and Golden were second, but the pair were Champions in the Junior Hunter division.
In the Small/Medium Pony Hunter division, it was “Not So Secret” that Calder Trotz was Champion. Large Pony Hunter champion was Illuminate, ridden by Mary Grayson Fauser.
Kali Wright Ryan and her Jack InThe Box won the Marshall & Sterling U.S. Pony Medal.
