UT Martin’s 50th Annual Spring College Rodeo A Rousing Success

Martin, Tenn. – The 50th Annual Spring College Rodeo, at the University of Tennessee at Martin, is in the books, as the campus hosted the event April 12-14, 2018 at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.

Both UT Martin rodeo teams finished third in their respective standings, as the men’s squad earned 365 points while the women’s team accumulated 240 points. Missouri Valley College won the men’s side with 1,030 points and Arkansas-Monticello took home the women’s title with 305 overall points.

A pair of UT Martin cowboys notched points in bareback riding, led by Houston Herbert. The senior posted second-place finishes in average (144) and in the short go (78) while splitting third in the opening round with a 66. Jonny Walker also collected points in all three phases for UT Martin, finishing third in the short round (73), splitting third in the first round (66) and placing fourth with a 139 average.

Will McCraw tallied points in every phase for UT Martin in calf roping, as he placed third with a time of 11.1 seconds in the short go, fourth with a 24.1 average and sixth with a 13-second effort in the opening performance.

In breakaway roping, Kayla Lombardo nearly swept all three categories for the UT Martin women’s squad. Her 6.0 average was the best in the field while her 3.1 seconds in the short go split first. Her first round time of 2.9 seconds ranked second in the field.

Two UT Martin cowboys posted points in steer wrestling. Cord Barricklow came in second in the short go (4.7) on his way to splitting third with an average of 10.6 seconds. Logan Neal also accrued points in those two phases, as he placed fifth in both the second round (6.4) and in average (12.0).

In team roping, a pair of UT Martin duos accounted for points. Clay Tilley joined forces with McCraw to claim second place in the short round (6.7) and fifth place in the average (19). Quentin Sawyer and Colton Matthews also dialed up points for UT Martin, as they finished fourth in the second go (7.6) and sixth in average (19.3).

Barrel racing was a dominant event for the UT Martin women’s team, as a total of five different cowgirls were responsible for points. Raegan Taylor led the charge as she displayed the best average (26.67) and best short round time (13.38) while also placing third in the opening round (13.29). Casey Allen also came through with points in all three phases, placing fourth with a 27.11 average, splitting fourth with a 13.4 first-round time and finishing fifth with a 13.71 time in the second go. Bailey Forester (fourth with a 13.63 in the short go, fifth with a 27.24 average), Molly Hill (split fourth with a 13.4 in the first round) and Summer Conley (sixth with a 13.42 in the opening round) also received points for UT Martin.

UT Martin rounded out the regular season on April 19-21, 2018 in Senatobia, Miss. at the rodeo hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College.
