The Mississippi State Agriculture Extension Program is offering two horse seminars this spring.
The first is a one-day, hands-on approach to gaining knowledge associated with equine management. This course will be taught on March 24, 2018 in Starkville, Miss. at the MAFES Horse Unit. Topics include:
· Hay is for Horses: nutritional management
· Looking Past Papers: equine athlete conformation
· Straight from the Horse’s Mouth: dental care
· If the Shoe Fits: practical farrier work
· What’s that Doohickey Do? bits, bridles, and training tools
· My Horse is just “Big-Boned:” body condition scoring
· Vital Signs are Good: vital signs and how to take them
· What’s My Alternative? alternative sports medicine therapies

Ranch Horse Series
MSU Horse Management 101is a 6-week course (Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm) starting March 27, 2018 that will be taught near Batesville, Miss. at Triple W Farms, 2049 Hughes Rd., Courtland, MS 38620.
Horse Management 101 is a program aimed to provide horse -interested persons with the management and training skills necessary to promote successful practices. Topics will be discussed in a lecture setting and complimented with hands-on riding and training techniques. Lecture topics will address numerous aspects of equine businesses, while training topics will cover the basics needed to promote effective communication between horse and rider.
Objectives: To provide equine enthusiasts with education in the areas of equine management, training, and horsemanship;
To promote effective communication and camaraderie between equine interested persons and professionals throughout the state of Mississippi;
To develop a volunteer network for the 4-H horse program.
Cost: Entire program (lecture and riding sessions, with personal horse; limited to 15 total) or entire program without a horse (can still listen to riding lectures; no limit on number of participants) is $200 (includes meals and lecture materials).

March 27: Session 1 Lecture topic: Proper feeding and nutrition practices for the horse, Tim Mays, Equine Sales Territory Leader, Cargill Animal Nutrition. Training topic: Basic control and guiding, Dr. Clay Cavinder, MSU Horse Extension Specialist; Associate Professor.
April 3: Session 2 Lecture topic: Selecting the equine athlete, Ms. Courtney Phillips, MSU Assistant Horse Judging Team Coach, Graduate Assistant. Training topic: Effective horsemanship: establishing control and developing rhythm in the ride, Ashley Shiffler, MSU Horse Unit Manager and Equestrian Team Coach.
April 10 Session 3 Lecture topic: Tack and equipment function. Training topic: Developing softness and suppleness for ranch riding, Dr. Clay Cavinder.
April 17 Session 4: Lecture topic: Safety with Horses. Training topic: Maneuvering ranch trail obstacles, Dr. Clay Cavinder.
April 24 Session 5: Lecture topic: Hoof Anatomy: A practical approach to hoof care, Dr. Terry Swiderski, Magnolia Equine Service. Training topic: Putting it all together - Riding reining patterns, Dr. Clay Cavinder.
May 1 Session 6: Lecture topic: The science of exercise and conditioning the equine athlete. Training topic: Working cows: position for optimum control, Dr. Clay Cavinder.
All sessions are from 6 to 9:00 p.m. (6-7: classroom; 7-9: riding arena)
Cost: $200 (riders limited to first 15 to sign up). Unlimited spots for non-riding participants.
