The annual Mid-South Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity was, once again, at the Show Place Arena in Memphis, Tenn. October 21-22, 2017. With the All American Quarter Horse Congress still going on (October 3-29, 2017), and lack of easily online access to the showbill, entries were down from last year’s Futurity. The showbill was available on facebook at Mid-South Breeders. Others believe that the onset of shipped semen has put a lot of back yard breeders out of business. “The futurities of the past are just not here anymore,” said show secretary Pat Kress.
That said, there were about 150 entries at this show, said Kress, with 90 stalls filled, including tack stalls, said Show Place manager Jamie White. Bob and Karen Johnson, who won the Amateur Ranch Riding at Congress were at this show.
For the AQHA classes, exhibitors could opt for the all inclusive flat fee of $215. And there were two free classes at the show: the MSQHBF Youth Western Pleasure and Novice Amateur Western Pleasure (Saturday only).
Futurity classes offered included: MSQHBF 2 &3 year old Western pleasure, Walk/Trot 10 & Under, MSQHBF Maturity Non-Pro, MSQHBF Walk/Trot, MSQHBF 2 & 3 year old Non-Pro Western Pleasure, MSQHBF Novice Amateur Western Pleasure, 3-year-old mares class, and 20year-old Mare Owner Breeders class.
Judges for the show were Sharon Wellman and Kathryn Kope on Saturday and Mark Baus on Sunday.
The MSQHBF was founded in 1982, comprised of Quarter Horse breeding farms in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The futurity is designed to show the offspring of select stallions in the mid-south area. Information available on their website at: www.midsouthbreeders.com.
Next on the mid-south Quarter Horse circuit is the Turkey Circuit in Tunica, MS November 25-26, 2017.
