Nettleton, MS – Sunset Stables is a privately owned stable just outside of Nettleton, Mississippi. The boarding facility has been recently purchased and updated by Mitzi and Patrick Shook. The Shooks hosted an Open House on July 30, 2017 for guests to meet their horses and see the barn.
The facility is state of the art and one of the pastures overlooks a large lake. There are also three separate paddocks for group and individual turnout. There are several boarding options to meet the needs of individual clients.
The barn has 12 spacious stalls with sliding doors and windows, a heated/cooled lounge with restroom, kitchen area, and a large tack and feed room. The barn has two grooming areas plus a wash stall with cross ties. In the event the horse should need any medical procedures, the barn also provides stanchions.
“When I was younger, my childhood was filled with horses, but my children weren’t able to have that experience,” recalls Mitzi Shook, owner. However, a family vacation and trail ride into the mountains one summer changed everything. Their youngest daughter, Emily, fell in love with riding and, soon after, talked them into signing her up for riding lessons.
This led to the search for the perfect new home with plenty of land for horses. It took well over a year of looking and visiting many places that just weren’t right for the family. After a while they found Sunset Stables and settled in happily.
“It’s important to us to expose our grandchildren to horses and let them grow up around them and riding them.” says Mitzi. Sunset Stables definitely offers a family oriented atmosphere with a focus on the children and their enjoyment. Emily’s first horse is “Sunny,” a Quarter Horse who seems to be the mascot for the barn.
In addition to the facility’s amenities for horses, they will be offering riding lessons by their in-house trainer, Kidron Young. Children from ages 2 and up are welcome to sign up for lessons.
Kidron has been around horses all of her life, having grown up around a Standardbred Racing Farm where her parents worked. By age nine she was training her first pony, and at age 14, she began training on a more professional level. She worked with local riders in her home state of Ohio. She primarily trained trail horses and then accepted a position training horses for the trail line in West Virginia. Life’s circumstances have now brought Kidron to the north Mississippi area. She will be teaching primarily English riding and some Western riding. She is a follower of Monty Roberts and Buck Brannaman and uses their style of methods with her teaching.
Sunset Stables is located at 509 Roebuck Drive in Nettleton, Mississippi. Find them on facebook at Sunset Stables Nettleton or call (662) 315-3099. Full board is $400/month with lessons ranging from $25-$45/lesson.
