Sisters Alonna and London Cariani from Montgomery County’s 4-H Horse program exhibited their horses during the State 4-H Horse Championships June 19-24, 2017 at the National Walking Horse Celebration Grounds in Shelbyville, Tenn.
The show was huge, as 4-H members qualified from across the state, with about 240 youth showing 330 horses, with more than 1,500 entries in classes.
The State Horse Show offers classes in several divisions: western, speed, hunter, walking/racking, spotted saddle horse, miniature, ranch, and dressage. Montgomery County exhibitors competed in the ranch, hunter, and walking/racking divisions.
The Western and Ranch divisions started the week’s activities. Alonna Cariani competed in the Ranch division with her young horse “SD”. She placed ninth in Halter Geldings and eighth in Ranch Trail.

London showed her hunter horse “Sheza Gifted Article” in the Junior High division, earning the following rosettes: second in Hunter In Hand Mares, eighth in Hunter Under Saddle, fifth in Equitation, eighth in Hunter Hack, and ninth in Hunter Trail.
Friday and Saturday the gaited competition started and both of the sisters competed with their gaited horses. London showed her gaited horse “Jim’s Big Hit” in the Walking Horse division and earned: eighth in Jr. High Walking Horse Showmanship, sixth in Walking/Racking Halter Geldings, eighth in Country Pleasure, and second in Walking/Racking Trail.
Alonna showed her Racking horse “Smokey Joe Black” in the Spotted Saddle Horse (SSH) division and placed in the following classes: Jr. High SSH Showmanship, fifth place; SSH Halter Geldings, sixth place; SSH Horsemanship, first place; SSH English Pleasure, third place; SSH Western Pleasure, sixth place, and SSH Gaited Trail, first place.
Alonna accumulated enough points in her age division to bring home the Champion High Point in the Spotted Saddle Horse Racking division.
The next step for 4-H horse project members is the Southern Regional Horse Show, held at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenterin Perry, Ga. on August 2-6, 2017. The Hippology and Horse Bowl Contests will be on Wednesday, August 2. Demonstrations, Public Speaking, Horse Judging and the judging phase of Hippology will be on Thursday, August 3. The opening ceremony and awards presentation for all of the educational contests will be Thursday evening in Reaves arena. The horse show portion is from Thursday afternoon through Sunday, August 6.
Forty participants from each of the 13 Southeastern states may qualify for this show. Alonna and London will represent Tennessee in the show.
