UTM Rodeo Teams Place Third In First Competition Of The Season

MARSHALL, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams began the 2016-17 season with third-place performances at the rodeo hosted by Missouri Valley College.

The UT Martin men’s team racked up 435 points, while the women’s squad compiled 145 points. Missouri Valley College won both events with 865 points on the men’s side and 240 points on the women’s side.

Houston Herbert performed well for UT Martin in bareback riding, finishing third in average (128) after placing third with a 62 in the first round and placing second in the short go with 66 points.

In calf roping, Quentin Sawyer split first with an average of 135. His time of 10.0 in the opening round was the best in the field, while his 13.7-second time ranked fifth.

A trio of cowgirls earned points for UT Martin in breakaway roping. Alexandria Hancock placed second in the first round (2.6) and fifth in both the short go (4.1) and average (6.7). Shara Adcock split third in the opening round with a 2.7 while Alexandra Lyle also earned fifth place honors in the first round with a time of 2.9.

Craig Parks and Robbie Van Holten each tallied points in steer wrestling. Parks’ 8.2 second performance in the short go ranked fifth, while Van Holten’s time of 13.8 in the second round split sixth.

UT Martin dominated team roping, as a half-dozen cowboys earned points in the event. Ross Mitchell teamed with Ethan Wheeler from Cossatot to sweep the event, winning all three rounds (12.3 average, 5.9 first round, 6.4 short go). Sawyer and Patrick Houchins joined forces to split second in the opening round (6.6) before finishing fifth in average (6.6 on 1). Tucker Kail and Clay Tilley placed fifth in the opening go (7.2) and sixth in average (7.2 on 1), while Douglas Rich and teammate Dustin Jacobson from Arkansas-Monticello claimed sixth in the opening round (7.5).

Five UT Martin cowgirls recorded points in barrel racing, led by Kenzley Wilson. The junior out of Black Oak, Arkansas posted an event-best score of 14.95 in the short go before coming in second place with a 30.2 average. Macy Randolph finished in fourth place in average (30.42) and in the second round (15.12), while Ashley Brooks came through with a second-place performance in the opening round (14.99). Madison Crow claimed fifth-place finishes in both average (30.45) and in the second round (15.14), while Brandi Pittman’s time of 20.42 in the short go ranked sixth in the field.
Ryan McDaniel was one of just three participants to earn points in bull riding, as he was responsible for a 61-point performance in the short go.

UT Martin returns to action on Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at the rodeo hosted by West Alabama.
