May 1, 2016 – The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams wrapped up the regular season April 28-30, 2016 by each bringing home top-five finishes at the event hosted by Cossatot Community College in Texarkana, Arkansas.
The UT Martin men compiled 160 points to place fourth in the team standings while the women’s team accumulated 145 points to finish fifth.
In bareback riding, Tanner Phipps and Houston Herbert earned points for UT Martin. Phipps placed first in the opening round (71) before coming in third in both the short go (64) and in average (135). Herbert finished fourth across the board, tallying a 55 in the first round, a 51 in the short go and a 106 average.
UT Martin accounted for the top finisher in all three phases of breakaway roping. Kelsey Bussell boasted the best time in the short go (2.1) and in average (4.9) while Molly Hill’s 2.2 in the first round was the lowest time. Natalie Fletcher also amassed points for UT Martin, splitting fourth in the second round (3.6) and finishing fifth in average (6.4).
Robbie Van Holten and Slade Bronson each tallied points in steer wrestling. Van Holten’s times of 15.2 in the short go and 22.5 in the average each ranked sixth, while Bronson’s 6.5 time in the opening round ranked fifth.
In team roping, Tucker Kail and Clay Tilley came away with points in the first round as their 9.4 time was good enough for fifth place.
Three UT Martin representatives secured points in barrel racing. Nealey Dalton finished second in both the short go (15.12) and in average (30.7), while Molly Hill’s times of 15.61 in the short go and 31.21 in average ranked fifth and sixth, respectively. Kylie Brueggeman also picked up points with a 15.53-second performance in the opening round, finishing with the fifth-best time.
UT Martin makes yet another appearance in the College National Finals Rodeo, which will take place in Casper, Wyo. on June 12-18, 2016.
