What’s a great way to enjoy the weekend after Thanksgiving and avoid the crowded shopping malls? The Mid-South Quarter Horse Association Turkey Circuit, AQHA show in Tunica, Mississippi. The show began late Friday afternoon, November 27, 2015, with Trail, Ranch Horse, Western Riding, and Reining. Riders showed before two judges, Kenny Hall and Jeff Mellott.
Saturday’s classes, November 28, 2015, got an early start with a full regimen of Halter classes, with competitors showing to all four judges, Hall and Mellott, Sarah Bradley, and Cynthia Rucker. After the break, and re-calibration of cute meters, the show resumed with Small Fry Showmanship, followed by Novice Youth, Novice Amateur, Youth, Select Amateur, and Amateur Showmanship. Then came the Lead Line contenders (more cute meter re-calibrations) and Small Fry Walk-Trot, 10 & Under.
A featured fun class on Saturday was the Open Walk Trot – The Turkey Trot. This was a Jack Pot class, offering 60% pay back plus $250 added money; the rider or family must own the horse shown. Another special class on Saturday was the amateur Ranch Horse Riding Jack Pot – 60% payback plus $250 added. There were other random $50 drawings at Saturday’s show, too: Open Hunter Under Saddle (two drawings); Open Trail (two drawings); Open Reining (two drawings).
So it was a great weekend to earn some cash, have fun showing horses, and work off some of that Thanksgiving turkey.
