The 13th year of the Mega Barrel Race was run August 20-22, 2015 at the Kirk Fordice Equine Center in Jackson MS. The promoters were Ralph and Lynn Feathers of Lan Bar Barrel Racing, Collierville TN. This was the biggest Mega Barrel Race yet, with 815 entries and 5 divisions. $150,000 in prize money was paid out, including $40,000 added money. Pro-Rider saddles, crafted by Jerry Bethune of Seal, Alabama, were awarded to the winner of each division, and Travis Childers of Mason, Tennessee provided a wooden saddle rack for each saddle. The division winners also received a Yeti Cooler. One hundred Trace Rios silver belt buckles were awarded, along with 100 vests and 50 engraved halters.
Talmage Green of Sandy Hook, Mississippi riding DTF Way took the 1D Prize of $8,000 with a winning time of 14.012. The 2D winner of $6,000 was Jenny Smith of Ball, Louisiana on Bobby Sox Flit, with a final time of 14.526. Shelby Ryan from Vancleave, Mississippi ran the cloverleaf in 15.025 seconds win the 3D and take home a check of $5,000. The 4D ended in a tie, with an even speed of 15.519 between Shelby Winstead of Eads, Tennessee on Truly A Peponita (aka Truck) and Cheri Turner of Coldwater, Mississippi riding Another Mean Dean (aka Streak). The first and second place prize money for the 4D race were combined and then split between Shelby and Cheri. They amicably split the other award items, too.
This was Shelby’s first big money winnings. She received a $2,396 check for this race, as well as a Pro Rider Custom saddle. Her horse “Truck” almost did not make the race. He had picked up a virus the week before, was off his feed and running a fever of 105° F. But some tender loving veterinary care and four days of alcohol baths helped bring down the fever and got Truck back to the top of his game. Shelby also competed on her other horse Rarely Goes Easy (aka Cruizer). He had a time of 15.502 in his first go and 15.309 in his second go, with a finals time of 15.195.
This was Cheri’s first year at the Mega. “We had a blast!” she said. “Streak actually belongs to my husband. We bought him as a 4-yea-rold and my husband trained him. He is 19 years old now. I am completely overwhelmed with pride! He’s a big horse with the biggest heart ever, and an amazing personality to go with it.”
The 5D winner was Shelley Chretien of Dounsville, Louisiana mounted on LJ Cash Me in, with a final time of 16.014 and a take home check of $2,500.
