On May 16, 2015, the University Of Tennessee College Of Veterinary Medicine welcomed farriers and veterinarians to its second annual Equine Podiatry Conference. The day-long event provided exhibits, lectures, and demonstrations. Keynote speakers included Dr. Greg Staller, a board-certified equine surgeon who has been involved with sport and performance horses throughout his career and has been an official at many USET and FEI events and competitions. The other guest speaker was Bob Pethick, APF, CJF who has been shoeing horses since 1971, was inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2006, and has been a speaker at the AAEP and AFA conventions as well as the International Hoof Care Summit.
Dudley Hurst, farrier for the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, said in an interview with WBIR TV: “Horse owners should look for farriers who attend continuing education events and are interested in personal development and growth. A good farrier keeps up with latest techniques and knows what is available. A properly trained farrier is essential in helping care for a horse’s hooves. About 70 percent of all lameness we deal with originate with the hoof.”
Greg Staller - DVM, DACVS
Greg Staller, DVM is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and is the founder, owner and surgeon/clinician at Running ‘S’ Equine Veterinary Services in Califon, New Jersey. His main interests are orthopedics, sport horse medicine and lameness diagnosis and treatment, as well as orthopedic and general surgery and ophthalmology. Dr. Staller’s professional time is devoted largely to lameness work which has developed into a major interest in and close relationship with the equine foot. Greg has had the good fortune of working with some of the best horseshoers and farriers over the years, the collaboration with whom has led to success and reputation with a broad range of lameness conditions and hoof maladies.
Dr. Staller received both his undergraduate and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California, Davis. Growing up in a ranching family in the San Joaquin Valley of California, his experience was with ranch, cutting and reining horses, and he played intercollegiate polo on the university’s team. After completing his internship and surgery residency at University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, Dr. Staller went into private practice as a surgeon and clinician. He has been involved with sport and performance horses from the outset and has been an official at many USET and FEI events and competitions.
Bob Pethick - APF, CJF
Bob Pethick, owner of Bedminster Forge in New Jersey, began shoeing horses in 1971. He apprenticed for three years with several farriers and attended forging seminars at Bruce Daniel’s South Jersey School of Horseshoeing. Pethick has served on the AFA Therapeutic Exam Board and has been active with the AFA Certification Committee. Bob is also a past and current president of the Garden State Horseshoers Association Northern Chapter, has served on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Association of Professional Farriers and was inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2006.
Pethick is AFA Certified, Journeyman Certified, AFA Examiner and member of Horseshoer’s Union Local 16. He has shod many world champions and Olympic horses in all disciplines. A two-time member of the North American Horseshoeing Team, Pethick is also a five-time member of the American Farriers Team and has represented the US in international competition. Pethick has judged the AFA National Competition, World Championship Blacksmith Competition in Calgary, the Mustad National Competition in Scotland and the International Team Farrier Competition in England.
Pethick gives many clinics on balance and recognizing and treating hoof capsule distortion and has been a speaker at the AAEP and AFA conventions as well as the International Hoofcare Summit. Pethick promotes excellence in the industry.
