Bordeaux (FRA), February 9, 2014 – Boyd Exell (AUS) has claimed the FEI World Cup™ Driving champion title for the fifth time in his career in a thrilling finale held in the sold-out Expo Centre in Bordeaux (FRA). It was not an easy victory for the Australian who won the neck-to-neck race only 0.69 seconds ahead of rookie Daniel Schneiders (GER). Title defender Koos de Ronde (NED) finished third.
What turned out to be a very exciting FEI World Cup™ Driving Final 2014 got under way on February 8th in Bordeaux (FRA). IJsbrand Chardon (NED) had been well on his way to secure his third FEI World Cup™ Driving champion title after the experienced Dutch driver had won the first competition. Following had been Daniel Schneiders (GER) in second, ahead of Koos de Ronde (NED), with Australia’s Boyd Exell (AUS) in fourth.
But all that changed after some unexpected developments on the last day. Just two hours before the start of the second competition on Sunday afternoon, leader IJsbrand Chardon (NED) made the difficult decision to withdraw on the advice of his veterinarian. “Two of my Lipizzaners had temperature [fever] and the veterinarian advised me not to start in today’s competition. I am, of course, following his advice for the welfare of my horses,” Chardon explained.
