The United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) announced the 2013 Emerging Athletes Program (EAP) National Training Session finalists. Among the top 16 finalists is Bowers Cone of Collierville, TN.
The University of Findlay, Findlay, Ohio, will host the 2013 Emerging Athletes Program National Training Session on November 14 - 17, 2013, at the James L. Child, Jr. Equestrian Complex. Findlay is home to a premiere equestrian program with a long history of top placings in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Nationals. The 32-acre James L. Child Jr. Equestrian Complex has two indoor arenas, an outdoor sand ring, and a grass jumping field. Also housed at the equestrian complex is the University Equine Veterinary Services, Inc., a veterinary clinic offering emergency and routine surgery services.
Peter Wylde and Karen Golding will serve as the National Training session clinicians. Peter has served as Lead Clinician of the EAP National Training Session for five consecutive years and Karen returns as the National's Stable Management Clinician.
Bowers’ riding career is involving lots of travel this year. He left his Collierville home in July to spend the summer in Canada training with his uncle Mac Cone, silver medalist on the Canadian show jumping team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. “Mac took his stirrups away,” dad Beanie said, “so all his lessons have been without stirrups.”
Bowers has been working two horses: Cassini Z, a 6-year-old bay, and VIP Quality Royale, a grey, on whom he won the Gambler’s Choice event at the Germantown Charity Horse Show in June.
Near the end of September, Bowers and his uncle traveled to Barcelona, Spain, where Mac competed in the Furusiyya FEI Nation’s Cup Jumping Final 2013, which began on September 27. [See the November Mid-South Horse Review for results of the Nation’s Cup competition.] Dad Beanie hopes that Bowers learned a lot from being at the Nation’s Cup and meeting the top international show jumping riders.
After the November EAP Training Session, Bowers will go to Wellington, Florida in December and compete on the Florida circuit through the spring. The 17-year-old eleventh grader is home schooling this year, but Bowers will return to St. George’s Independent School in Germantown, TN next year.
