It was one of those “local boy does good” stories. The second event of Thursday night’s (June 6) performance at the Germantown Charity Horse show was the Gambler’s Choice class. This jumper class is different from other jumper classes in that each fence has an assigned number of points and the riders can elect their own course. At the end, the rider who accumulates the most points in the allowed time wins the class. There is one other special jump – the Joker, worth 200 points. After their allotted time, riders can opt to jump the Joker fence. If they clear it with no knock downs, they get an additional 200 points on their score. If they have a rail down, they lose 200 points from their score. So it’s an exciting event for the audience to watch!
Bowers Cone pulled an exciting ride to win the 2013 Gambler’s Choice, riding VIP Quality Royale. Bowers is the son of Germantown, TN trainer Beanie cone and nephew of Olympic rider Mac Cone.
The class is sponsored by the family of the late Harold Walker, Jr. As a younger jumper rider, Harold’s favorite class at the GCHS was Gambler’s Choice. The whole Walker family, down to the youngest, Harold DeFord Walker IV, aka “Hank,” were on hand to deliver the hand-crafted trophy created by Andrea Lugar, as proud dad Beanie Cone watched from the in-gate.
