The $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic is the defining event and culmination of the horse racing season. The 1¼-mile, Grade 1 race attracts the top international Thoroughbreds; it is open to horses 3 years old and older and is limited to 14 starters. This year’s 2-day Breeders’ Cup races were held November 3-4 at Del Mar racetrack in California, with 11 starters in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic..
In Saturday’s 34th running of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm’s 4-year-old Gun Runner was the victor. Trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Florent Geroux, Gun Runner covered the 1 ¼ miles on a fast main track in 2:01.29. Gun Runner is a Kentucky-bred son of Candy Ride.
Gun Runner went to the front shortly after the break and Collected immediately took up the chase. The two raced through the early part of the race in their own little duel. Leaving the far turn, Collected made one more run at Gun Runner, but was quickly rebuffed as Gun Runner drew away to defeat Collected by 2¼ lengths. This was the fifth victory in six starts
in 2017 for Gun Runner and his fourth Grade 1 triumph.
West Coast finished another 1 ¼ lengths back in third and was followed in order by War Story; favorite Arrogate and Gunnevera, who ran in a dead-heat for fifth; Churchill; Mubtaahij; War Decree; Pavel; and Win the Space.
