The Memphis Polo Club hosted a tournament with visiting teams, St. Louis and Bluewater Creek Polo at the Rossvile, TN polo fields. There were two Saturday matches with the winners of those two matches playing at noon on Sunday to determine the final winner.
Susan King, local horse owner and centered riding student, reports on her first polo match. Susan has a unique insight into a polo match even though it was her first one. Susan boards her horses with Steve Tipler’s polo string in Olive Branch, MS. She watches the precise exercise and training regime that Billy Anderson does with these horses on a daily basis.
Susan King explained, “This was the first Polo match I've ever been to and it was exciting to watch these riders playing this game when their horses were going at top speed. I have a new respect for polo horses as I now know the training and work they go through to become fit enough to play 7 minutes of a chukker with the majority of that time at top speed. There aren't many horses that could keep up with them for that long and these horses do it even when the temperatures get above 90 degrees. The riders are amazing as they are riding their horses at top speed, using only one hand for the reins and the other hand for the mallet then bending and turning in every direction to get to the ball. I wondered at times how they even stayed on their horse especially when they would get bumped by another player. Talk about centered riding.”
The Memphis Polo Club has tournaments scheduled through the middle of July and then starting again in September. The Memphis Polo Club offers exciting tournament play well into the crisp days of October, and these matches are particularly exciting to watch as the horses revel in the cooler temperatures.
