The Mississippi Walking Horse Association held its annual awards banquet at the Kosciusko Country Club on February 18.
The big news of the evening was the induction of Oxford, Mississippi native, Dr. Tommy Vinson into the Hall of Fame. Dr. Vinson received his first saddle horse as a gift from his grandfather when he was three years old. A lifetime of not only owning and breeding fine walking horses , but also supporting the industry led to this honor.
The MWHA also named its highpoint winners for the 2011 season. Overall Highpoint Walking Horse was Jazzone, owned by Ben Moss and Ron Carney. Overall Highpoint Racking Horse was Fireman FG owned by Mary Jo Hodges. Highpoint Flat Shod Horse was Shimmer, owned by Danny and Betty Murphy. Highpoint Trainer was Abernathy Stables.
Other awards which were voted on were as follows: Ben Moss was names Horse Person of the Year. The Gum Tree Classic,in Verona, MS, was named Best One Night Horse Show. The Delta Fall Classic in Tunica, MS was named Best Multi-Night Horse Show. Brian DeBerry from Abernathy Stables was named Best Assistant Trainer.
