This is a continuation of the fictional story told in first person by Elliot Marks, an Ole Miss co-ed. Horse lovers, and especially fox hunter, will not be disappointed in the descriptive action on many a page. Galloping across fields and through forests on her Thoroughbred Masterpiece, one can feel the wind in the face and even taste the Mississippi mud when the occasional unintentional dismount happens.
Foxhunting is not the only equestrian activity described in this book in detail. Elliot and her friends are adventurous enough to learn to ride sidesaddle, using their skills over fences and in the hunt field. A lone horseback trek on one of the Georgia barrier islands results in slipping into quicksand in front of two alligators, whereupon Masterpiece decides to make a quick exit, leaving Eliot to walk across the largely uninhabited island.
Other field sports such as turkey and duck hunting are described with the accuracy that can only come from the firsthand experience of the author.
Romantics will not be disappointed in this third book either. Elliot’s often difficult relationship with Griffen Case, introduced in the previous books, eventually takes a turn for the better. This romance, however, has some suspenseful and dangerous moments when Griffen’s father, serving time for murdering Griffen’s mother, escapes from prison and goes after Elliot. Griffen is a fast rising movie actor and is hopelessly in love with Elliot. He is relentless in his marriage proposals. She has her doubts, but eventually with the support of her family, friends, and her faith, decides to accept. The wedding is at the hunt, mounted sidesaddle. The couple has similar tastes enjoying horses, travel and other outdoor activities, so they settle and raise a family in a blissful country life.
