August 3-6, Agricenter Show Place Arena
The International Buckskin Horse Association (IBHA) World Championship came to the Agricenter Show Place Arena in Memphis, TN August 3-6. Extreme hot weather, which included a heat advisory almost every day, made the conditions tough, but the covered arenas at the Agricenter provided shade for the visiting horses and their people.
Unfortunately, attendance was down from last year, both with horses and spectators. Past President of the IBHA, Ted Handel, wants to let everyone know that admission for spectators is always free. He would like to see more people from the Memphis area to come to the show. Next year’s show will be the fourth year the World Championships have been held at the Show Place Arena.
Many people, such as Bob Sneed from Harrisburg, PA, drove for many miles to come to the World Show. Bob shows in the difficult trainers classes, but training horses is his second job. Bob’s full time job as a Television Master Control Operator takes most of his time, but he makes time for his passion-his horses.
Bob was introduced the world of Buckskin horses through his AQHA stallion, a dun. His stallion started producing more duns and buckskins, and Bob found the IBHA shows to be a natural place to showcase his stock. Bob was hoping to continue his winning streak from last year’s show. At the 2010 show he won the Two Year Old Lunge Line Championship and Reserve in the Two Year Old Snaffle Bit Gold Cup.
This year Bob brought a Yearling Lunge line Filly “Unzip the Gold” which he wants to sell after the show. Bob also brought his Senior Western Pleasure Horse “Cody Version Dun It” or Cody, his eight year old mare. Unfortunately, this year Bob did place in the top two spots. For someone whose passion is working the horses, the winnings are important, but the satisfaction comes from the daily work that is necessary to get to a show as important as the World Show. Bob expects he’ll be back at the World Show next year!
The Buckskin World Show includes many other events besides just the show. There are sales, exhibitor’s parties, an ice cream social, and the Queen’s Ball on the last night.
The IBHA is a color register only. The IBHA determines that, “true buckskin should be the color of tanned deer hide with black points. Shades may vary from yellow to dark gold. Points (mane, tail, legs) can be dark brown or black. Buckskin is clean of any smuttiness. Guard hairs which are buckskin colored grow through the body coat up over the base of the mane and tail.
Dun is an intense color with a hide that has an abundance of pigment in the hairs. The dun color is a duller shade than buckskin and may have a smutty appearance. Most dun horses have dark points of brown or black. Dun horses sport the ‘dun factor’ points which include dorsal and shoulder stripes, leg barring, etc.” Other accepted colors are grulla, red dun and brindle dun, which are explained at www.ibha.net.
Breeding a buckskin to a buckskin may not necessarily produce another buckskin. Many of the horses are double registered with the American Quarter Horse Association, and the IBHA and the AQHA partner to promote the double registered horse.
