Pamela Becker's art is inspired by "life itself. There is so much beauty all around us; so much that brings joy and fulfillment in simple pleasures," she said.
Animals are often the subjects of Becker's oil paintings: "Creatures with whom we have a strong bond; or an event, something very special in life."
"Come Saturday Morning" is a painting of her future daughter-in-law, based on a small photo. She and her daughter were on the equestrian team together at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. "They love early morning, so I tried to capture the early morning light, and their nervous excitement, as they were preparing for an event."
"It's A Riding Habit" is a still life of her daughter Johanna's riding things. "They recall the times when she would be polishing her boots, getting ready for an event. In the anticipation of an event, there is a stillness in a person's life that stays with them. I wanted to capture that."
"Sudie – An Arabian Mare" is Pam's horse. "Voyager" is another family horse. Pam has nine children, "so everybody has a horse, plus some extras," she said. "At one time we had 28 horses. We love riding as a family, mostly pleasure riding." Their horses are registered Arabians, Paints, Quarter Horses, Percherons, and, of course, ponies.
Pam's family has a 175-acre working cattle farm, and their home is on 65 acres. "I love living in the country, having space of our own, where we can teach our children responsibility. Our children have always been involved with animals, so they learned to give of themselves. Horses are an important part of their lives." So is her dog Chloe, "my constant companion," she said. Her husband is a bi-vocational minister.
Pam paints from photos and strives for "photo realism," she explained. "There's more integrity to it", although some of her paintings are more "painterly" as she described them. She wants her paintings "to mean something to the purchaser; it's about them, something that touches their heart."
Pam started seriously painting in oils about 35 years ago, when her ability really began to blossom. Her motto is "Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might." When her children were younger, she found other venues to be creative: making artisan bread and working with textiles. She gave art lessons to her children, all of whom are gifted, on drawing and painting with tempera and watercolor paints. Seven of her children are now in college and beyond. She still has two children at home, all having been home schooled.
Even with all these family and animal obligations, she "always has something in the works." Currently she's working on a commissioned painting of a foxhunter who has been hunting for 40 years. She's doing a portrait of him in a natural pose with his horse.
Pamela graduated from Florida State University with B.A. in History and Criticism Of Art and Studio Art. She received further instruction from Mark Carder, Sue Foell, and Ann Manry Kenyon.
