New Home For Dudley Manley Trainer in residence and barn manager at Five Point Farm Beginning July first, Dudley Manley is the trainer in residence and barn manager at Five Point Farm, 370 Wade Drive, north of Rossville, TN. Dudley is leasing the facility from owners McCall and Elizabeth Wilson, who are very happy to have Dudley on board. The facility has ten stalls, wash racks, an indoor and outdoor arena, round pen, and plenty of lush green pastures on 50 acres. Dudley will be cutting hay off part of the acreage. Dudley said it was not easy to leave his former location on Yancey Rd., but he is pleased to come to this facility. His many friends all respect him as a good horseman; they look up to him. Elizabeth said all speak highly of him. Dudley is famous for his natural horsemanship training methods. His main training tool is what he calls a “stick and string.” He touches the horse all over, using “a nice, rhythmic scratching motion.” He has found that horses tend to be one-sided because humans do everything with them from the left side. But to properly train the horse in balance, people should do everything equally on both sides. Humans should “be rhythmic with the horse. This helps them relax,” he said. He emphasizes getting the horse to respect you. Dudley has a quiet, soothing manner and is very supportive and complimentary of his students. In addition to horse training, Dudley regularly teaches riding lessons to children and adults. One of the horses Dudley is currently training is Just Plain Better, known as “Little Lena” around the barn, a two year old Quarter Horse, Cutting Horse bred by Joe Wright. “She has perfect conformation for what I want her to do,” he said. He will eventually train her to do reining. He also has her full brother in training.
