Longreen Hunter Pace
April 26, 2009 in Como, MS
By Susan Walker
The Longreen Hunter and Carriage Pace was held April 26, 2009 in Como, MS at Birdlands, the hunting estate of Harriet McFadden and family. Riders enjoyed lots of sunshine and cool breezes at the day’s event, after having been postponed from the previous Sunday, with rain, rain, and more rain. The countryside was in massive bloom with wild roses, phlox, honey locust trees, buckeye, and wild flowers. The footing was superb for both horses and carriages as they wound their way across the Longreen hunt country, following flagged country roads and trails. A check point along the trail provided a picturesque stop in a meadow nestled amongst trees with a view of the "Twin Lakes." Here participants enjoyed refreshments of orange juice, tea, water, or "fuzzy navels" with cheese and crackers. Jane Harris was the hostess, aided by Sue Sullivan and Evelyn Kennedy.
During the day, folks also enjoyed sitting in the shady pen, petting foxhound puppies from the "C" litter: 7-week-old pups of Longreen Tango and Longreen Krasher, named Como, Crenshaw, Cha Cha, and Courage. They loved every minute of the attention they received.
Riders enjoyed a potluck dinner in the historical 19th century log home, located by the entrance lake. Afterwards, awards were announced and winners picked out their prizes from a variety of tack, supplies, Longreen T-shirts, and foxy decor items. The proceeds from the event help fund the kennel help and hound feed for those long-eared, long-legged, bugle-voiced hounds of Longreen.
