The Legacy of the Horse Obsessed Royal Court The 2009 GCHS Royal Court By Lauren Pigford In March the Germantown Charity Horse Show (GCHS) announced its Queen and Princesses at the Royal Ball. Twenty-five princesses were introduced with the 2009 Germantown Charity Horse Show Queen, Miss Bailey Elizabeth Fedler. The Horse Show Ball is always full of dancing, laughter and smiles, where the families, volunteers and the sponsors have much to celebrate. The majority of the young ladies in the Royal Court are passionate, young horsewomen. Each year new princesses and a new queen are crowned, but one thing stays the same: the love of horses, which is what originally brought the founders of the GCHS together. Now, 61 years later, the same passion and energy is alive. Princess Sophie MacFarland Dunavant represents the Orchard’s Hunt Club. Sophie’s mother Leslie remembered how the Germantown Charity Horse Show influenced her life: “A former Horse Show Queen and good friend actually introduced my husband and me to each other.” Leslie recalled how Sophie would hand out ribbons in classes the Dunavant family sponsored and how “many vacations had been planned around the horse show.” Sophie started riding around the age of six. Her mother Leslie said, “I guess it was when she was about eight she would spend every waking hour at the barn.” It is a passion that taught her hard work, responsibility and commitment from a very young age. Princess Kathleen Ann Sullivan, representing Oak View Stables, spoke about her horse experiences: “I starting showing in the costume class at the horse show in about 2000.” Katie moved up from the costume class to short stirrup, pony jumpers, and now competes in hunters and jumpers with her horse Debutante. Becoming a GCHS Princess is something she has wanted since her first time at the show about 12 years ago. This year’s Royal Court is full of young ladies with horse obsessions, who with their knowledge of horses will assist volunteers and present awards and ribbons with smiles and enthusiasm.
