The "Tiger" Rules in Memphis 2009 Firecracker 4D, April 9-11 By Sherri Surman Grant Patterson and his 11 year-old-mare Renes Tigerett, aka Jett, definitely ruled at the 2009 Firecracker 4D, April 9-11 at the Show Place Arena in Memphis. Placing 4th in the 1D in the second go, he rolled his time over to Youth, placing 3rd in the 1D. With a little higher stakes and some hesitation from his parents, he entered the Slot Race on Friday night. With the fastest time clocked, he took home first. Coming back on Saturday for the final go, Grant said he decided to "go for broke." He was a little worried that his mare would be tired, but being the "tiger" she is, his decision paid off as the pair clocked the fastest time of the weekend at 14.5 seconds. Out of Renes Dan Jet, Grant and his parents bought Renes Tigerette from a close family friend, Kent Killion. Grant was 11 and Jett was 5. Grant is now 17 and she is 11, so the two have definitely grown up together, becoming a pair to be reckoned with. Grant says they're just getting started. Grant also placed 3rd in the 2D in the second go on Moon's Star Buck, aka Tango. He rolled his time over to Youth and won the 2D. The Patterson's bought Tango from another family member of Kent's, Donald Burke. Grant says he's really pleased with Tango, as he just turned 5 and is really turning into a nice barrel horse. Just getting over knee surgery and hobbling around most of the weekend, Grant’s mom said with a laugh, she'll hobble every weekend if he pulls in those kind of times. The payout at the show was just over $26,000 not including prizes. Buckles were given to division winners and youth division winners each day, as well as average winners.
