NTRL Team Roping At Show Place Arena November 15-16 at Agricenter Show Place Arena The NTRL (National Team Roping League) Memphis Regional Team Roping attracted some 400 teams to their November 15-16 event at the Agricenter Show Place Arena. John Johnson, NTRL producer, was pleased to see the turnout despite “the timing: with the National Finals just two weeks ago, the economy in a slump, and the holidays coming.” Their earlier events in 2008 at the Show Place Arena attracted “about 1200 teams in January and about 1600 teams in February and May. The winners of these events have the opportunity to go on to regionals and National Finals in Jacksonville, Florida,” he said. Two of the top PRCA ropers competed at the event: Kelsey Parchman of Clarksville, Tennessee and York Gill of Memphis. “They’re getting ready to go to Texas to start the PRCA tour, “Johnson said. In addition to top contenders, the show attracted a “wide range of ropers, from novice to professional,” Johnson continued. “We want to keep the western way alive. Memphis is one of our favorite places to come; it’s a good location and the Agricenter folks do a great job.” Johnson gave much credit to Priefert Rodeo Ranch equipment for “providing the panels, chutes, and equipment that make the show possible. They do a great service for the association and the ropers.” The show was organized by JX2 Productions. The NTRL holds over 100 events each year across the eastern United States. Team roping grew out of ranch chores of the past. It is a timed event that relies on the cooperation and skill of two cowboys and their horses. The first cowboy, the header, attempts to rope the head of the steer as quickly as possible. The second, the heeler, attempts to rope the heels, or legs. Chip Phillips earned the $2000 gift certificate, Heath Sanders took the #5 and #6 buckles, Flint Wesley picked up the #4 & Below buckle, and Brian Lee Walker went home with the #7 & Above buckle.
