WTHJA Harvest Time Show November 13-16 West Tennessee Hunter Jumper Association completed its 2008 show season with high turnout at the A-rated Harvest Time show November 13-16 at the Germantown Charity Horse Show arena. Chill winds and cold temps on Saturday spurred riders and trainers to flock around the hot coffee vendor. Sunday’s sun and milder temperatures brought welcome relief. Judges for the show were Brian Lenehan of Palm Springs Gardes, Florida; Meredith McLaughlin from Keswick, Virginia; and Jimmy Wofford of Pauline, South Carolina. Among the 152 horses brought to the show, 19 came from William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. Coach Linda McClaren brought 16 of the school ‘s horses and three student-owned horses with her team of riders. Kate Woodard, a senior and Treasurer for the group explained why they chose to come so far to the Harvest Time show. “We have been here several times before and enjoyed it. It’s a well-run show. So the officers on the show team pushed to come here again. We particularly like the footing, the good courses and inviting jumps. The show management works well with us.” Kate remarked that William Woods receives several donated horses from the Germantown area, but at present has no student riders from that area. William Woods established the first four-year Equestrian Science degree program in the U.S. in their Division of Equestrian Studies. Riding disciplines include Saddle Seat, Hunt Seat, Western, and Dressage. “Most of the students are working toward trainer and/or instructor positions, although some are pre-vet” as Kate is. “Other students are amateur-owners and we have a variety of other majors.” Asked how the team fared at the show, Kate replied, “We have been very successful. We have several championships and reserve championships in both hunters and jumpers.” The line-up of ribbons in front of their stalls was testimony to that! “This is the first A show for several students, so it’s pretty exciting!” Kate said.
