Lori Brown Has Plans For “Horse Lovers Only” Dudley Manley Clinics every third Saturday by Nancy Brannon Lori Brown has only been operating her “Horse Lovers Only” boarding stable at 755 Dent Road for a few months. In that short time, she has instigated regular horsemanship sessions with Dudley Manley and a trainer offering lessons to her boarders, Beanie Cone. She plans for Carla Paratore to periodically come to give Bowen Therapy demonstrations. Demonstrations and lessons are held in her covered arena. Brown is hosting Dudley Manley Clinics every third Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the year. The latest on July 19th attracted a crowd of about 25 people. Manley uses a “stick and string,” as he calls it, as his main tool for training. He touches the horse all over with the stick, using “a nice, rhythmic scratching motion,” he explained. He told the audience that horses tend to be one-sided because humans do everything with them from the left side. He said people should do everything equally on both sides. Humans should “be rhythmic with the horse; this helps them relax,” he said. He emphasized getting the horse to respect you. “The horse will not be your ‘friend’ or lover,” he explained. Brown likes Manley’s natural horsemanship kind of training. She said, “Dudley has taken some Parelli, some Clinton Anderson techniques and formed his own style.” She finds it convenient to have a local person with these skills who can regularly do clinics at her stable. Since leasing the stable in February Lori said there has been a lot of cleaning up and repair work to be done, handled by her husband Mitchell, who owns a forklift company. “We’ve spent months cleaning the barn and repairing fences, getting the property in shape.” She has 17 boarders now. “Beanie brought 13 of his clients here,” and she is pleased to have both a trainer and his students. There is opportunity to engage in a variety of equestrian activities, including trail riding, lessons with Beanie, horse shows, and 4-H. The stable is a multi-discipline, multi-breed facility. Brown’s family has four Paso Finos and a Tennessee Walking Horse. One boarder is a barrel racer. Another boarder owns a Clydesdale, ELI, who is a jumper. “He’s one of two pure bred Clydesdales in the U.S. who does jumping,” said Brown’s daughter Christina. Brown is one of the many equestriennes who “always loved horses, but I lived in the city,” she said. Eventually she bought her daughter Christina a horse, but spent so much time fooling with the horse, her daughter told her she needed to get her own. So she did. Then her husband Mitchell got one. Then Lori bought a mare in foal, “so now we have five horses,” she said. It’s easy to accumulate them when you have your own boarding barn. “Eventually I want my own barn and land,” she wishes.
