98th Birthday Celebrated With Buggy Ride Reprinted from Bolivar (TN) Bulletin-Times Mary Daniel Brotherton of Saulsbury, Tennessee celebrated her ninety eighth birthday on April 25, 2007. She spent the day remembering old times by taking a ride in her father’s horse drawn buggy. Mary is well acquainted B with this type of transportation and can still help with the horse’s harness. As a young girl, she rode a pony to school and later had a horse and cart. She loves to tell the story about the day she raced a young Saulsbury boy home from school. Her cart and his buggy “locked hubs,” which overturned her cart. She survived the incident and later married the young man whose name was Herbert Brotherton. She also remembers riding in the buggy from Saulsbury to Bolivar to visit “kin folks,” a trip that took five hours! In the winter, she would heat bricks and wrap them in cloth to keep her feet warm in the buggy. She and her mother would then stop from time to time to reheat the bricks and warm themselves, beside fireplaces along the way. She graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1928 and two of her classmates are still living. After graduating, she worked at her brother U.C. Daniel’s store for $15 per month. She saved her money and made a trip to Memphis by train to take advantage of the latest craze in ladies hair fashion, a $25 permanent. She and Herbert were married 62 years until his death in 1992. She is still very active and loves to cook and tend her flowers. She also loves to play music on her piano and talk about the old days. The horse and buggy now belong to her son, Billy, who lives next door.
