West Tennessee Hunter/Jumper Association was back in the saddle at the Germantown Charity Horse Show arena,
Germantown, Tenn., for the first of two USEF A-rated shows: Memphis in May I, May 6-9, 2021. The weather was looking clear and sunny on Thursday, until a short storm came roaring through, temporarily suspending the Opportunity classes until it blew over in less than an hour. Saturday was, by far, the best weather day with sunshine and temperatures in the upper 70°s. Show manager Barney Mallace commented on the great footing in the arenas for the show.
A feature of this show was the $1,000 Low (2’6”) Hunter Derby on Sunday, Mother’s Day, with Emily Green on Oasis taking the blue ribbon over 14 other entries. Clay Alder and Symphony placed in reserve.
The other special class on Sunday was the WTHJA Hunter Derby, with Katana Kennedy O’Brien taking both first, on Chablis 162, and second place, on Chosen. Jamie Sokoloff and her Bespoke were third.
Rachel Sutton and Solo Con Te 2 bested a dozen other riders in the Jr./AO Hunter Classic. Abigail Arnold and Keebler took the reserve red.
Kali Wright Ryan, with full trust in her mother’s horse Comaraderie, won the WIHS/NAL Children’s Classic. Anna Kate Ryan and Compelling rode to a compelling second place finish.
Margaret Dixon and her pony Brighton Whimsical were champions in the Pony Hunter Classic, with Seaton Edmonds taking the reserve on Hot Wheels. Dixon and Brighton Whimsical also won the USEF Pony Medal and the WTHJA Pony Medal. In fact, the pair seemed almost unbeatable, taking first place in 8 out of 11 classes entered and second place in the other four.
In the WIHS/NAL Low/High Child/Adult Jumper Classic, Kayla Benson and Corville Z earned the top points, with Amy Krebs and Play to Win taking the reserve spot.
Amy Krebs had a busy day, riding Hamilton in the Jr. Hunter 3’3”/3’6” division and the NHS 3’3” Medal; riding Somermist Storm Warning to Champion in the Large Pony division; and riding RF D’Orbalia to a first place in the High/Child Adult Jumper.

A special person at the May shows was show steward Jimmy Kovacs, now based in Tryon, NC. Kovacs and show manager Barney Mallace have been friends for decades, and it was a particular joy for Mallace to get his friend to Germantown as a WTHJA show steward. Kovacs hadn’t been back to Germantown for over 40 years, but he grew up here when he was a teen and attended Germantown High School. At one time he lived in the cottage that is now part of Bobby Lanier Farm Park, and Jerome Robertson’s stable was across the big [soccer] field from 7901 Old Poplar Pike.
His mother Jean Kovacs had worked for Richard Watson at his Germantown Stables, which is now site of The Village at Germantown retirement community. Mallace took Kovacs on a tour of his old “stomping grounds” around Germantown, and reminisced about the earlier years of the horse world in Germantown when it really was the center of horse activities in Shelby County.
WTHJA Memphis in May II
The May II show had perfect weather over the weekend, May 13-16, 2021: sunny and 80°F. There were some clouds on Sunday to keep the temperatures down, so it couldn’t have been better.
On Saturday afternoon, the Germantown Charity Horse Show folks treated the WTHJA competitors to “wine and cheese” hospitality.
A special feature of this show was the WTHJA Hunter Derby on Sunday, along with several Classics. Ainsley Wade and Baudelaire bested the field of 15 competitors to win the WTHJA Hunter Derby, taking home $1,500. Emma Dubinsky and Chablis 162 were reserve, earning $1,100 for their efforts. Carly Herrin and Dallas Thomason’s Just My Style were third and still in the money.
The Junior Hunter Classic attracted a dozen riders, with Ainsley Wade and Baudelaire again taking the win. Lauren Crawford and Cool Cash were second, with Keller Crosby and Coronado in third.
Calder Trotz and Fate were Champions in the Large Junior Hunter division, with Ainsley Wade and Baudelaire in Reserve.
Short Stirrup had four division winners: Caden’CZ, Jennifer Beasley and Patchwork Seagull, Callie Mullis, tied for Champion. Tango Shoes, Penelope Sugg and Panache, Brooke Buras, tied for Reserve Champion. Turner Kitchens and The Roan Ranger won Short Stirrup Equitation Flat, while Penelope Sugg and Tango Shoes won the Short Stirrup Equitation Over Fences, with Kitchens and The Roan Ranger second.
