John Johnson and his Jx2 Productions brought team roping to Memphis, Tennessee at the Show Place Arena on Valentine’s weekend. The team roping event was slated to run February 12-14, 2021, but Johnson had to hurriedly close the show at Saturday’s end before a week-long snow storm hit the mid-south on Sunday. The event started on an icy Friday, after freezing rain and sub-freezing temperatures hit the area on Wednesday. Roads were clear, though, as temperatures prior to the freezing weather had been fairly mild. While the high only reached 20 degrees on Saturday, it was plenty warm for ropers in the heated arena. Friday’s start time was moved to 10 a.m. to allow for safe travel during the winter weather.
The Muddy River Super Q offered some particular perks for ropers. John advertised, “Everybody that wins 1st-10th in all USTRC divisions wins a reduced Shootout to the National Finals in April. Everyone that wins a WSTR division will qualify for a Finale spot.”
On Saturday, Johnson and his team added the #9.5 WSTR to the evening’s divisions. Johnson explained: “Due to the extreme weather situation that is headed from Texas through Arkansas and going east, the management here at the AgriCenter has requested that we cancel Sunday’s portion of this event. So the #9.5 WSTR this evening will conclude this year’s Muddy River Super Q. We will be back here in Memphis in May. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone, but we are really concerned about making sure that everyone gets home safely.”
In spite of the weather, John posted that “We had around 500 teams and paid out a little over $98,000 in cash and $4,400 in prizes” at this event.
From Memphis, the Jx2 team traveled to Sarasota, Florida for the Florida Championships at the end of February.
