Midsouth Feed and Seed, the feed, farm, and tack store that has served Millington, Tennessee for over 60 years, has moved to a new location at 4668 Shelby Road, across the road from their previous location. This is the third building for the family-owned business since its founding. Billy Howard, owner of Mid-South Feed and Seed for the past nine years, said that the new building sits on 25 acres and was built as a workshop by his grandfather, the late W.S (Babe) Howard, who was the owner of Millington Telephone Company.
The new location gives the business a lot more elbow room with a 5,000 square foot showroom and 10,000 square foot warehouse. The warehouse has enough room for thousands of bales and rolls of hay, which Billy bales himself every year, as well as the feed and seed that is shipped in from several mills.
The Howards have been hay producers for many years, knowing all of the grasses and forage that can be successfully grown in the mid-south. By producing their own hay, they maintain a consistency of quality and nutrition and make sure there is sufficient quantity for the entire hay feeding season.
One great feature that many horse owners will like is that there is room for drive through loading out of the weather for both hay and feed.
Midsouth Feed and Seed is a dealer for Ware Milling and Nutrena horse and livestock feeds. They also sell most other items needed to keep your horse healthy, such as salt bricks, fly and pest control, supplements, and bedding. Poultry feed and supplies are available, and Billy said that starting in March they will have live chicks.
Billy’s Corgi Darla and the store cat Mama Kitty have made the move across the road, and Mama Kitty should enjoy utilizing the adjacent hay field to hunt, safe from traffic. The canine and feline staff have made sure that there is plenty of pet food in stock, with brands such as Valu-Pack, Sportmix and Diamond pet food.
All of the human staff have made the move as well. The store is known for fast, friendly service with competitive prices and good advice on both animal care and gardening tips.
There is a wide selection of garden and vegetable seeds in a well organized bulk seed bin. Bedding plants will be in stock in time for spring planting, along with most of the items a gardener will need to grow a productive garden and a beautiful landscape.
It’s nice to see a small family-owned business expanding in these challenging times, competing well with the big box stores.
