The Tennessee Reining Horse Association (TNRHA) hosted its last show of the 2020 season at the Show Place Arena, Cordova, Tenn. on October 29-November 1, 2020. The organization usually hosts four shows a year, but the previous three had to be cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reiners got a break this fall and were able to host this show in west Tennessee, although with requirements from the Shelby County Health Dept. for wearing masks and keeping distances of six feet or more. Judges were Ban Balow, Reid Fady, and Martin Larcombe.
The show had a lot to offer and had a “good turnout,” over 650 entries, according to TNRHA President Audrey Kidd and show manager Julia Reece. TNRHA has members from all over the country, so their shows typically draw riders from about 15 states, Kidd said. The show attracted several top names in NRHA, such as Marco Formentin from Princeton, Kentucky, the current NRHA Ltd. World Champion; Andrew Fox of Brashear, Texas; Cody Nordsiek of Berlin, Illinois; Jose Vazquez of Markham, Illinois; Mark Turner of Evansville, Indiana; and Jeremy Lipps of Miami, Oklahoma.
Formentin and Jersey Gun Nic scored a 148 in Friday’s Classic Open Derby and were Reserve Champions in L4, L3, L2, and Open. Nordsiek and “Puncher,” Ready to Playboy, were third in all levels of the Derby, earning a score of 147.5.
The primary attractions were the Open Derby, Non Pro Derby, Open and Non Pro Maturity, and the Open and Non Pro Futurities. On Saturday night, TNRHA treated everyone to a Blues and BBQ dinner, provided by Steve and Rita Harris and American National Insurance, in the hospitality room.
Friday’s first draw was the Akin Veterinary Non Pro 7 and Up Maturity, with $1500 added money. Later in the day was the TNRHA Rookie Shoot-Out, sponsored by Chris and Marna Hull. To top off Friday night was the Taylor Automotive Open Futurity, with $2500 added and the Texas Horse Power Non Pro Futurity, with $1500 added.
Saturday morning saw the TNRHA Green Reiner Celebration, with $750 added money, followed by NRHA Green and TNRHA Green/Para Reining. Later on Saturday were the Darling 888 Ranch Non Pro Derby with $6500 added, and the Fallen Pines Farm Open Derby, with $6500 added. Sixty riders signed up to compete in the Derby.
Sunday’s attraction was the Cardinal Ranch Open 7 and Up Maturity, with $1500 added.
Among these top divisions were scattered numerous classes for rookies, short stirrup, youth, walk-jog, and green reiners. All the special classes at this show had been planned for the whole year.
Every class offered special prizes, from coolers and blankets to prize buckets for every youth rider and leather halters to the winners. Every green rider also got a bucket of prizes from the sponsors.

Josie Torpey was Short Stirrup winner on Nu Revolution on Saturday.
Branson Stillwell took his first class win on Sunday in Youth 10-Under Short Stirrup riding TNRHA Hall of Fame mount Pearls King Whiz.
Hes Throwing Smoke and Kaylan Marks were Co-champions in the L4-L2 Maturity, and Champions in the Non-pro and Intermediate Non-pro slate 1.
Saturday Youth winners were Maggie Malone, Becca Schaffhauser, and Josie Torpey.
Gunning to Survive and Elizabeth Renee Hartin were the Cardinal Reining Horses L4, L3, and L2 Open Maturity Champions! Congrats to owners Kenny and Deanna Nell.
Alejandro Ortiz Vasquez piloted SLJ Corazon Caliente, owned by Jose Vasquez, to a score of 150 to take the Fallen Pines Farm Open Derby win.
There was a two-way tie to win all three levels of the Non Pro Derby, sponsored by Darling 888 Ranch, between Ronnie Fox abroad Blaze Faced Gunner and Rachel Olsen aboard Spooks Smokin.
Shooting Stars and Jacqueline Lipps were the $750 added Green Reiner Celebration winners.
Josh Lyons and Bay Bay Voodo were Friday’s Open Futurity L2, L3, L4 winners.
Jeanna Schaffhauser and Buttons On My GT were Friday’s Non Pro Futurity L2, L3 winners and were second in L4, behind winner Jose Vazquez on Juice N Cash.
Becca Schaffhauser and Dun Got My Rest were Rookie Shoot Out on Friday night and Youth winners on Saturday. The pair were also second in the Youth class on Sunday, with Becca winning it on Dunitwithasmokingun.
