On November 20-22, 2020 the Tennessee Stock Horse Association (TNSHA) hosted a series of clinics and shows at the Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, Tenn. In previous years, the MTSU Stock Horse Team has hosted the Region II American Stock Horse Association (ASHA) Clinic and Show, and the Candy Corn Classic Open show. Due to COVID-19 placing limitations on the team’s ability to host, TNSHA graciously accepted the large task of hosting the shows this year. The weekend boasted over 300 horse/rider combinations, making it the largest TNSHA event of the year.

November 20th:
The weekend started with an all-day clinic with world champion clinicians, Ben Baldus and Savannah Eaves. Ben Baldus, from Bowie, Texas, shared his cow-work techniques with each clinic group. Savannah Eaves, from Springfield, Tennessee, focused on reining maneuvers. Groups rotated between Savannah and Ben, gaining skills in both the reining and cow horse events.

TNSHA also hosted the first-ever Youth Skillathon on Friday evening. This event was free-of-charge and invited youth from middle Tennessee area to show off their horse knowledge and hands-on skills. Sponsors included Need a Hand Horse Training and the MTSU Stock Horse Team. Winners of the Youth Skillathon were Jordan Martin (High School), Gracen Fletcher (Middle School), and Grace Spooner (Elementary). Friday evening’s activities concluded with a jackpot herdwork class, won by Lisa McCarthy-Harrison.

November 21st:
TNSHA hosted the 2020 Region II Championship on Saturday, covering reining, cowhorse, trail, and pleasure events. Buckle prizes, sponsored by the American Stock Horse Association, were awarded to high point winners of each division. Reserve high point winners were awarded a quality DC Cowhorse headstall. The largest class was the Open Jackpot Ranch Riding, which included over 38 entries and was divided into three heats. The Candy Corn Classic provided multiple disciplines an opportunity to show their horses affordably in a world-class facility. Disciplines ranged from ranch classes, to halter and showmanship, to western pleasure and hunter under saddle events. Placings 1-6 were awarded a ribbon. Judges for the Open Show were two Congress Champion MTSU Students: Kailey VandeKamp and Rachel Petree.
