One of the mid-south’s well established feed and seed stores is changing ownership, but will remain as it has been for some time to come. Kebin and Cheryl Mitchell took the reins of Hall’s Feed and Seed in Collierville, TN on June 1, 2020. Previous owners Jimmy and Beverly Thompson said that they will be staying on for awhile to smooth the transition. The Mitchells will be the third owner of the store, established in by Garry Hall in 1999.
The store is one of the main suppliers for horse and livestock feed and supplies to Shelby and Fayette counties in Tennessee, as well as North Mississippi. It is a dealer for brands such as Nutrena, Purina, and Ware Milling. In addition, the store stocks poultry and supplies, hardware, seed, bedding plants, and toys. Several times in the year Hall’s hosts Purina Horse Owner Workshops and other informative and fun events. Mid-South horse owners like the friendly, personable family atmosphere of the store where you chat with the owners and they know you and sometimes your horses by name.
Kebin and Cheryl are very used to working together. They both work in their railroad contracting business, Mitchell’s Contracting Service, which they established in 1989, but their lives together go back much further than that. They met in the third grade, were high school sweethearts, and have been married for 34 years. They have two grown children, daughter, Natalee Holmes and son, Chad Mitchell, four grandchildren ages 13, 11, 3, 2, and another on the way. Chad’s wife Kortny is the horse person in the family, and Cheryl said the Kortny is determined that her three-year-old son Oakley will grow up with horses. Kebin grew up in the country with horses, chickens, and cows.
Cheryl described Kebin as a “go getter.” “When he gets his mind set on doing something it will happen. He became interested in purchasing Hall’s Feed and Seed about six years ago, but the timing wasn’t right. About three years ago he looked at it again, but the timing was still not perfect. Last December he approached the Thompsons about buying the store, and this time the timing was good,” and the Mitchells took ownership in June.
Cheryl said that they no immediate plans for changes in the store because “it has worked so well for Jimmy and Beverly. The customers love them, they love the atmosphere, and we don’t want to do anything different. We want it to continue. Eventually though, we would like to expand the product line and the property area.” Kebin has his mind set on that, so it probably will happen. Cheryl added, “I plan to go on the route with Justin, who is Hall’s delivery man, to meet and get to know the delivery customers and get to see their farms. I cannot tell you how much we enjoy this.”
