MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams finished the fall semester on a high note as the Skyhawks claimed season-high point totals on the way to team victories on both the men’s and women’s side at Murray State University.
UT Martin’s men earned its third first-place finish of the year, securing 975 points to win by a commanding 445 points over second-place Missouri Valley College. On the women’s side, UT Martin chalked up 355 points to defeat second-place Missouri Valley College by 95 points.
Four UT Martin cowboys earned points in bareback riding. Stetson Bierman displayed remarkable consistency as he placed second in average (149), second in the short round (75) and third in the opening go (74). Hunter Green split first in the opening round (76), finished third with a 144 average, and fourth with a score of 68 in the short go. Ridge Palmer tallied points in all three phases, coming in fifth place across the board (131 average, 67 first round, 64 short go).
Completing the scoring in that event was Blake Leamon, who placed fourth in the opening go (71) and sixth in average after carrying over that 71.
In calf roping, Chase Thrasher won the average (19.2) and the short round (8.7) after his time of 10.5 seconds in the opening go ranked third in the field. Cole Harmon also registered points as he placed second in the first round (10.4) and sixth in average (25).
Jayci Braudrick paced a trio of UT Martin cowgirls who generated points in breakaway roping. The senior out of Caddo, Oklahoma recorded the best time in the second round (2.8 seconds) and split third in average (5.8). Casey Allen earned fifth-place finishes in average (16.5) and in the short go (13.4), while Kayla Lombardo’s 2.7 in the opening round was good enough for sixth place.
Perhaps the most dominant performance of the weekend came from Robert Haley, as the senior from Fairhope, Alabama claimed top honors in average (162) and first-round scoring (79) in saddle bronc riding. He nearly swept first-place finishes, but his 83 in the short go was the second-best score in the field. Tyler Pruitt also added a scoring performance, as his 65 in the first round placed third.
In steer wrestling, Cole Harmon won both the average (12.1) and the short round (5.7). Hunter Styles’ 5.9 in the short round was good enough for second place, while also placing fifth with a 14.6 average. Chase Thrasher accounted for points in his second event of the weekend after he placed second in the opening go (4.6), sixth in the short round (14.2) and sixth in average (18.8).
Four women’s squad members were responsible for points in goat tying. Jayci Braudrick continued her impressive weekend by finishing second in the opening round (7.5), fourth in average (15.8) and split sixth in the second round (8.3). Lauren Heck finished fourth in the short go (7.9) and split sixth in average (16.1), while Abbie Austin’s 8.1 in the short round came in fifth place in the final standings. Shayne Mallory added a fifth-place effort in the opening round with a time of 7.9 seconds.
UT Martin came away with seven scoring contributors in team roping. Justin Sailors joined forces with Cody Hogan to tally points in all three phases, boasting times of 16.5 in average (second), 8.0 in the short round (third), and 8.5 in the opening go (split fifth). Styles and Thrasher tag-teamed for the best time in the short go (5.9) and the third-best average time (17.5). Jake Glass and Carson Stroup also collected points in all three phases, placing fourth in the opening round (7.9) and fifth in both the short round (13.4) and average (21.3). Logan Neal gave UT Martin its seventh scorer in the event as he partnered with Southern Arkansas’ Jimmie Bryant to split fifth in the opening go (8.5 seconds).
Casey Allen tallied points in all three phases of barrel racing, as the Vandergrift, Pennsylvania native split second in the opening round (13.5), finished third in average (27.27), and placed fourth in the short go (13.77).
Junior Wyatt Hart earned points in bull riding, as he topped the field in both average (77) and in first-round scoring (77).
UT Martin gets a break from official competition for the next three months, opening its spring slate at East Mississippi Community College on February 27-29, 2020.
