On Saturday May 18, 2019 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, the 144th Preakness Stakes got off to a bumpy start for jockey John Velazquez, as his mount Bodexpress reared and leaped out of the number 9 position in the starting gate, leaving Valazquez on the ground. Bodexpress continued running the entire race with the other horses, and fortunately, stayed well to the outside and did not interfere with any of the other horses in the race.

Before a crowd of 131,256, it was War of Will and jockey Tyler Gaffalione who claimed victory in the 144th Preakness Stakes. Starting from the number 1 post position, War of Will outran the 13-horse field, the largest at the Preakness since 2011, according to the Preakness website.

Warrior’s Charge went to the early lead with Market King running in second. War of Will was fourth on the inside behind Anothertwistoffate in the first half mile of the Preakness – with Bodexpress running seventh on the outside. War of Will hugged the rail for most of the mile-and-three-sixteenths distance. As they came into the stretch, War of Will moved up on the rail, bringing a strong challenge to Warrior’s Charge. Coming down to the 16th pole, War of Will was in front by two lengths and kept the lead to win the race. “Today was the day for War of Will!” summarized the race announcer.

Final results:
1: War of Will
2: Everfast
3: Owendale
4: Warrior’s Charge
